My wife made a veg soup this week, all good healthy ingredients, but when I tested my BG two hours later it was 12.1, up from 6.9 before the soup. I couldn't understand it and wondered if it had anything to do with the oat cakes I had in place of bread. I had another bowl today without the oat cakes, and when I tested my BG had gone from 7.1 to 10.6. I told the wife and we were both stumped at what could have caused the rise. It was only when I was tidying up in the kitchen that I checked the sugar content of the scotch bonnet chilli sauce that I noticed the sugar content was 29g/100g. I've asked the wife to make more soup next week, but I'll refrain from 'spicing it up'.

Tabasco should be fine!

What actual veg were in it though - and was it liquidised?

It will be the veg rather than the chilli. I doubt you would have had anywhere near 100g of those in the soup. Liquidised root veg will hit your blood pretty quickly.

Yep, deffo the veg. Turnip is ok, carrots in moderation & potatoes are the worst. Try it with something like turnip, swede & butternut squash.🙂

I eat chillies like candy when I eat Sichuan food especially with Tofu and Beef lift the top of the head off spicy, it has zero effect on me regarding BG levels.
Root veg will probably be the culprits @Chappy I would tend to agree with that.

Thanks guys. Info past on to the cook/wife.

Chillies are suppose to be good at lowering BG so I've heard.

That did it.... Had to break into my batch of fermented garlic..... Wow!!! Awesome.... Must make another🙂
