Hospitals could join prisons and social care in a cycle of “crisis, cash, repeat” unless they receive better financial planning and reforms, a Whitehall report has warned.

Without improvements, public services are doomed to fail or breach spending controls, the report by the Institute for Government and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) said.

The government’s austerity programme of delivering good services while cutting spending “ran out of steam” in 2015, according to an analysis of official figures. Both organisations are urging the chancellor to ensure any measures in the budget have sound evidence behind them.

Seems to be how the past few years have gone - cut everything to the bone, see what problems it causes, wait for it to get really bad, offer sticking plasters to keep things going until the next crisis... :(

It doesn't matter as long as we can keep our nuclear defence missiles, pay for dozens of overpriced American strike aircraft and make it 20 minutes quicker to escape Birmingham. You've got to look at the bigger picture.:D
And that's only thanks to our 'strong economy' that means wages have only stagnated for the past 7 years, half our public services have gone, and debt has increased to highest levels ever. But that's OK, because multinationals still get to set their own tax bills and inheritance tax has been cut 🙄 Once we've driven all the foreign workers and students out and inflation has quadrupled we can look forward to a future where we don't get to retire until we're long-dead, popping our clogs in a house owned by someone else...

Is there anyone else under the illusion that the purpose of HS2 is to revitalise northern England?
It's pretty obvious that besides (if you'll excuse the pun) providing a gravy train for those involved, it's main purpose is to make it easier to commute to London

Indeed :( I can't believe they are getting away with it 😡 All that investment should have started in the North, where it is really needed.
