Earlier this month I spent three days in hospital with the mother of all urine infections. I was also given ultra sound due to the pain i was in , possible gall bladder. Ok a bit of sludge there but bomshell was that I have tumour on kidney which they are going to remove on 5th Feb. I'm not too worried about op but the thought of having 10/12 days of hospital food turns me off, after the recent experiance off cold congealed food I wouldn't give a dog. When I was in hospital in 2004 the food was beautiful and cooked in house now I understand food is cooked elsewhere brought in and reheated. I thought I'd play save and have a weetabix for breakfast, they can't do anything to that surely, wrong, when I got it it arrived in a little plastic bowl with a lid on. On removing the lid I could see a dry weetabix. I thought the milk was hiding somewhere so got my spoon and crunched it down only to discover it was dry. Fortunately a lovely nurse took pity on me and got some milk from their tea place. The lady opposite me had rice crispies and said they were awful as they tasted dry and stale. If I'd had the strength I would have gone down to the Resturant where they have excellent cooked food and eaten there. I mentioned this too my GP and he said there had been lots of complaints. I live between two hospitals but my sister in law who was recently in the other one said the food was just as bad there. Sorry about the rant.

Such a shame that standards have declined so much :( When I was in hospital in 2008 I thought the food was excellent (cooked in-house), and I actually wrote to the catering manager afterwards to compliment her. Recently, I read in the local press that the meals had been contracted out to the lowest bidder and was now disgusting :(

Didn't James Martin (the chef) do a series where he tried to turn things around in a hospital? Food can be such an important part of recovery and your hospital experience - I'm sure when they get it right money is saved in the long run by having happier patients that recover more quickly. I suppose it's a bit like schools where good food would would help the students be more alert and better able to learn, but often quality is driven down by cost concerns.

I hope that things go well with the op, and that things have improved food-wise by the time it comes around 🙂

I think it depends largely on where you are, although most hospital food is dire at the best of times.
