A new report has criticised government efforts, which involved celebrity chefs, to improve hospital food. But James Martin believes expert chefs can still help raise standards.

You are ill, in hospital and might not feel like eating anything.

Maybe you could stomach chicken soup. But the odds are you won't be served it.

Some hospitals are serving locally sourced, sustainable, nutritious food, and receiving accolades for it, as they are saving money, food waste and jobs.

However, according to a report produced by The Campaign for Better Hospital Food, the UK government has wasted more than ?54m of taxpayers' money on failed attempts to improve patient meals since 1992.

I've been looking forward to his new program on this, pity the article didn't say when it's on. The one he did about Scarborough hospital was great.

I've got a lot of faith in (the Yorkshireman) James Martin 🙂 It is possible to have good hospital food - I've eaten it - so there should be no excuse for it being so dire in so many places.

Celebrity chefs team up to overhaul hospital food in Wales

Welsh chef Stephen Terry is better known for his Michelin-rated food, but in a new BBC series he teams up with James Martin to bring proper grub to NHS hospitals. Kirstie McCrum browsed the menu

Lumpy mash, sugary jelly, congealed custard ? for the thousands in Wales who go into an NHS hospital every year, what?s on their plate can be enough to make them want to go home again.

It?s no surprise to most of us to hear that NHS menus can be tired and underfunded, but it?s this which has prompted celebrity chef James Martin to head up new BBC series Operation Hospital Food, offering patients across the UK a chance at a better, brighter mealtime ? basically doing for NHS meals what Jamie Oliver did for school dinners.

He (James M) was on the One Show the other night talking about this. You see the WILL is there, once someone shows them how to do it - it's just that nobody ever took the INITIATIVE before.

You know this SODEXCO business? - well we regularly visit a seaside place in N France (Berck sur Mer) where there is a huge old hospital that fronts onto the beach. It's now a Centre for Cranial Injuries and we walk past (the back of) it when going from the campsite to the town. The kitchen building is actually on the opposite side of the road to the hospital and Boy! - are the smells coming from there good, or what? And they clearly supply other places too because there are always big white vans loading and unloading.

We often stop and wait a bit to savour the aromas and it always makes us hungry LOL
