Out of interest, from the point of initial diagnosis to being under the care of the hospital diabetes - how long? Hi

For me right away as I was admitted to hospital and diagnosed there xx

And me Kaylz - well next day and then saw OP consultant approx 3 months later, then every 12 months until I got my first pump, now I'm on my 3rd pump, its 6 monthly. Always 'ish' though.

However should I not be managing OK at any time in the interim, I can always ring and get to speak to a DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse, ie they work full time only in the D clinic) and if not available immediately they call me back.

I was given a number and an email address in hospital the day I was diagnosed, I emailed (in the middle of the night) first thing the following morning I received a call asking me to come to the diabetes centre that same day. I’ve seen your story on your other thread and if I’ve read it correctly then you really shouldn’t be waiting at all in my opinion. My diagnoses was during covid times also. I wish you all the best as this must have be so hard for you physically and mentally xx

I was diagnosed at GP surgery (initally assumed Type 2 but with a question mark) and my care was initially overseen by the diabetes trained nurse at the GP practice (not a DSN) but she was in regular contact with the consultant or DSNs to discuss my case/BG results and I was started on insulin 6 weeks after diagnosis by that nurse and a visiting DSN at the GP surgery.
I got an appointment with the consultant at clinic a month or so later and was tested for Type 1 a few weeks after that. Being started on insulin is really important before you get that hospital appointment, especially if it is significantly delayed. You definitely need to chase it up with the diabetes clinic and your GP, as being left without treatment or stopping a treatment which was clearly extremely dangerous for you, is not a satisfactory situation. Keeping a food diary along with your before and 2 hour after meals BG readings will help both you and the health care professionals to see what is happening, so that is something you can do in the mean time, but do push for more support rather than just wait patiently (or otherwise). Please let us know how you get on as it is a very worrying situation.

Welcome to the forum @Jen.h

I was admitted into hospital the day I got my results too.

How has your diagnosis come about? Was it fairly recent? Who are you currently seeing for your diabetes care?

Hi @Jen.h from another that was referred in hospital when admitted with DKA.
Saw the consultant there and then on regular appointments with him and DSN from then on.
