I feel totally let down by my local hospital as i should have had an operation last week on my frozen shoulder which i have been suffering from since may last year. Before the op was due to take place the nurse tested ny blood sugar and it was 14.2 now i know that this is high but it was only like this because i had something to eat and drink before i went to bed the night before like i was told to do because my b.s. does tend to drop during the night. My b.s. was too high for the op to take place so i was put on a drip to bring my b.s. down. After a few hours my b.s. went down to 6.4 but then they told me that the operation had to be cancelled because the surgeon had left the hospital for the day. I could not believe this when i heard it so now i have to wait for another date to have a pre assessment done before i can have the operation. This has been a complete mess up from start to finish what they should have done was admitted me the night before and monitored my b.s. during the night which is what they normally do with diabetics as i was told by one of the nurses. I feel, like i am back to square one and getting nowhere fast.

These darned things always seem to happen at weekends when your GP is either relaxing at home or earning extra cash covering for NHS24.
Contact him for an appointment first thing on Monday and if he is worth his salt, he will rattle a few cages at the hospital and hopefully accelerate the op time schedule.

I would write the saga down so that you don't forget something important.

Ditto from me too. I hope you get something done too. I know several people who have had ops cancelled because an emergency has come up and it has been ages before they get another appointment.

I cant help much - but thought i would tell you that i have had the op - manual manipulation and steroids etc.. and i woke up in agony! Sorry to make you worry - but if i were you i would definatley ask for morphine BEFORE you wake up from the op! It took 2 hours for it to work on me and i was in tears! I have given birth 3 times naturally - and the pain was worse than that! Also, mine hasnt worked properly - so i am having it done again in 2 weeks time! 😡Bev

p.s. I should add that my arm was completely 'frozen' so probably made things worse for the surgeon - hopefully yours wont be so painful! Bev

The saga continues

Just had my pre assessment at the hospital yesterday and have had some more blood tests done now have to wait till they get the results back before they decide when the operation will take place. How much longer is this gonna go on for before the operation takes place who knows...... hopefully not much longer at least when i do have the operation done i will be admitted the night before so that they can monitor my b.s. overnight which is what i think they should have done in the first place although they said that it is not hospital policy to admitt diabetics the night before an operation.

Was your blood sugar high when you arrived? or was the first time it was checked just before the operation? I would have though you could have corrected and then been moved on the list if necesarry.

Hope that you are able to get a date through soon.

When i arrived my b.s. was 14.2 now i know that was high but it was only because i had something to eat before i went to bed the night before like i was toldto do. My b.s. does tend to drop fairly quickly overnight. I was put further down the list on the day but by the time my b.s. came down to 6.4 the surgeon had left the hospital . It was a total mix up and lack of communication between the staff.

Things are looking better

Just had a phone call from the hospital earlier and they said that i need to phone them on wednesday afternoon and providing there is a bed i should be admitted that evening and will have my op done thursday morning so fingers crossed heres hoping things will get better from here on.
