Hi, I am recently diagnosed and being treated for type 2 diabetes and am 40 years old active healthy eating and work as an exercise instructor. I’m not saying it’s not possible for me to have type 2 diabetes but I’m researching the possible reasons why.

I am currently on a progesterone only hormone contraceptive and have come across some research that suggests if your estrogen decreases then progesterone can have an affect on your insulin.

I am just wondering if there is anyone out there that has come across this or is in a similar situation.

Thanks in advance.

Many people feel they have a healthy diet but unfortunately it can still be too high in carbohydrates for somebody with a Type 2 diagnosis to cope with, wholegrain, pulses and some low fat products are high in carbohydrates.
Have a look at this link to see how your 'healthy' diet compares to one which is designed for those with Type 2 who need to reduce blood glucose. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
Depending on what your HbA1C is you may only need to make some modest changes if only just over the threshold.
I can't say about the hormone issue but there will be many who will be taking that medication with no effect on blood glucose.

Female hormones can and do affect blood sugar @leanned_84 - both natural bodily hormones (and lack of them) and the Pill, HRT and other hormone treatments. The only way to know for sure is for you to stop the POP for a while and see.

Thanks I have stopped so it’s just a waiting game now! So much to learn!

Thanks, I have started recording my nutrition on my fitness pal and have made some minor changes reducing my carbs slightly l, moving to dark chocolate and whole meal bread/rice etc.

My thoughts with the hormones are that years ago women were encouraged to not use the pill injection long term due to concerns with bone density however research changed and then it was ok for women to continue long term.
This would mean that my generation are the first to go through longterm and now at age 40 my estrogen levels could potentially have fallen and the pill injection is progesterone only and could the be potentially causing an issue with my insulin….
