Is anyone going to watch this tonight? it is Dr Mosely again and it is about eating less and maybe fasting as this may be the way to go to live longer - should be very interesting indeed although i have never fasted and don't know how i would cope without trying

I'll probably have to catch up on iplayer or record it (Olympics!), but will definitely watch it - these MM programmes are usually very well presented 🙂

I think Dr Mosley is very good and really enjoy his programms. It should be very interesting 🙂.

Very interesting programme he look os much better, can't see any doctor agreeing to it for Diabetic patient.

Are any T2's not on any medication like myself going to try the 5:2 diet as explained in this programme? i feel tempted but hate feeling hungry so it would be a big challenge for me.

Why couldn't people with diabetes do these diets? Surely if you've matched your medication to your diet, there's no reason why you should go high or low?

I am on a calorie controlled diet now and would like to have a go at the 5:2 one, but they also said inthe prog that eat less protein, so I would have a problem there I think.

The program was fascinating though, and for diabetics T2s, I wonder if the original 4 day fast may work, as it triggers the same body response, but we would only need to do it 4 times per year.

Slipper : are you on a calorie controlled diet to lose weight? i need to lose weight so (lots of it) so if i do this 5:2 it will be initially to help me lose weight and eventually for it to become permanent but don't have a head start in the 'helping longevity' as i have several stones to lose first but am very tempted. I may pick a couple of days in a week ie Mon & Tues as my 2 500 calorie a day and 5 on the normal SW plan which i am doing.

I found it interesting in that the 2 days fasting, I thought was about 500 calories per day. This is not a million miles away from the Newcastle 600 calorie diet, but only for 2 days per week, but obviously a lot easier to achieve.

I am always suspicious of these type of programs. Is there a book to sell? Surely, if you eat to lose a little weight - you are fasting? If you eat and put on weight you`re not! When someone says you only need so many calories a day, does that take in to consideration what a person is doing physically that day?
Designed to `massage` the consciences of the viewer in my opinion!

Hi Carina, yes, I lost 3 stone over the year by severely reducing carbs and then I hit a plateau, and I found if I didn't watch the calories now, I would put weight on, so now (with little exercise for other reasons) I am watching what I eat.

I do remember my last bloods showed a huge improvement with my triglicerides (spl), which is good i beleive.

No book. It was a documentary on a couple of research programs in the USA. The crux of the research is that if you drastically reduce your food intake for a period or don't eat at all for a period then it changes the way your body operates. Most people who have tried dieting in some form or another find that they put the weight back on at a later date. The research is based on triggering a change not in reducing your daily calories.
Horizon doesn't tend to be about promoting anything, just reporting the facts, perhaps with the slanted view of the presenter, but I found it refreshingly honest. You shouldn't be so cynical John! Have you watched it?

Can anyone tell me, with the 5:2 diet, when you are on the 2 days of 500/600 calorie intake, do you have to eat them in one sitting or can the calories be spread out throughout the day?

I think the guy in the program decided that his one meal would be breakfast, and thus I assume it meant have the bulk of your calories in one sitting, as the object of the exercise was to trigger the reaction in the body. But not definately stated as I recall.

No I didn`t watch the prog. Vicsetter, maybe I`ll have time today to catch it on the red button - although I`ve still to make a decision on statins yet after a couple of hours last night!

I didn't get on with statins, leg aches etc and I've tried all of them and Niacin (which was interesting, but not a statin). But try them and be on the look out for muscle side effects, forewarned is forearmed or something.

I've decided to bite the bullet and start Day 1 today of 2 days of sticking to 500 cals. It will be a huge challenge for me as i have always hated the feeling of hunger but will see if i last by the end of the day. I have just had green tea and water so far, it is only 10.55am and am determined to stick it out. I'll certainly look forward to my 500 calorie meal tonight 🙂

What are you having? I had a look at the diet shake products and they all either have sugar or maltodextrin so it could be soup when I bite the bullet, although last night I had salmon and salad, all very good but spoilt it with a couple of blue ribbands (99cal each BTW).
