I don't know how long I have diabetes but it was diagnosed 3 years ago - I have been on insulin ever since. I had a heart attack two years ago and take about 10 pills a day. I have put on more than 10 kilos in the past year.

I eat and drink all day and night. Get pains in my heart and pray that I burp so that I know it was trapped wind. I am completely out of control - ready to die every day - food makes me feel good.

Hi Geraldineto

SO sorry you are feeling so bad right now - hope you find a way to deal with everything soon xx

Am sure someone will have more help for you or better advice - I am just diagnosed so not gone through that much D wise yet.

Just wanted to let you know there were people here listening x

Hi, I'm sorry you feel so low. Have you spoken to your doctor about how you feel? It might pay you to get some professional help for a different perspective.

Come here and share with us, many people find sharing how they feel helps them sort their problems out. I hope you feel better soon

I am embarrassed to go to the doctor - I have put on weight instead of losing it.
Food makes me feel good

Hi Geraldine, very sorry to hear that you are feeling so down :( What insulin are you on? It does sound very much like you want to get things under control, but perhaps don't know how to get out of the vicious circle you find yourself in. If you haven't already done so, please do speak to someone, either your GP or a nurse, so that they can discuss ways to help you. It can be a good idea to assess where you stand with things so that you can find ways to move forward, so it would be worth sitting down each day and writing up a food diary, itemising everything you eat and drink and including the carbohydrates it contains. This will be very helpful both to your doctor and to you, as you will be able to start looking at ways to improve your diet and start feeling well again. Diabetes is horribly unfair, because poorly controlled blood sugar levels will make you feel worse and make it more difficult to feel positive about things, but once you have begun then hopefully things will start to look a whole lot better. Are you able to do much exercise? If possible, going for a daily walk will help raise your spirits and improve your insulin sensitivity greatly 🙂

You've got lots of lovely friendly and knowledgeable people here who will be happy to support you, so do please ask any questions you may have. Take small steps and don't overwhelm yourself, let us know how you are going please 🙂

And don;t be embarrassed to see your doctor -they will want to help you, it's their job and the reason why they became doctors 🙂

please don't feel embaressed about going to your doctor, he is there to look after you. It is difficult but once you have done it and start getting the support and things start to improve, you will feel better and brighter.

the thing that works for me when I have something difficult I need to raise is to make notes and take a list ot he things you want to bring up. That way you will raise the most important things and will be able to come back to other issues as time goes by.

Food can indeed make you feel good. It is much the same with alcohol. The key is to enjoy and not to over indulge. If there is a meal you particularly enjoy make it a once a week treat ? for instance I have a full English breakfast every Sunday and a high fibre cereal for the rest of the week. You should definitely go to your doctor for support ? eating and feeling guilty is not good for anyone!

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling like this. I love food and have found comfort in it during some difficult times. I have put on weight but have joined weight watchers online and it is a great help. It isn't easy to break out of this vicious cycle but you can do it.

I am in Italy - don't know if I can join WW online. Is it suitable for diabetics?

I have heard that fasting 2 days a week is good

Hi there, and sorry to hear you're feeling so down at the moment. It really sounds as though you might be suffering from depression, and perhaps getting some help for this should be your first priority?

On the diabetes side of things, have you got access to a dietician? You don't need to give up all the nice foods you enjoy, it's more a case of making gradual changes towards smaller portions, and eating the less healthy options less frequently. Some people have found joining a group such as weight watchers helps because you have the social contact and support of the other group members, as well as a suggested meal plan to stick to if you find it hard to create your own meal plan.

Why not have a look at the Diabetes UK website, or speak to someone on their careline?

Hope you feel more upbeat before too long. 🙂

Hi with weight watchers you choose the food that you eat as long as you keep to your points allowance. It is very flexible so great for diabetics and it allows you to have treats. I'm allowed 26 points per day plus 49 points per week for treats PLUS you get extra points for exercise including walking. My understanding is that fasting for two days a week is not recommended for diabetics.

Welcome Geraldineto.

Juts noticed your comment that you're in Italy. Obviously you write good English, but do you also speak good Italian so that you can talk with a doctor and consult local websites for advice about diabetes, which will be more appropriate to Italian health services, food, customs etc.

As others have said, small changes to diet can make big differences in the long term. However, diet and medication are just part of the story - exercise / physical activity is also very important - if you can find something you enjoy doing, whether walking, cycling, climbing stairs, gardening, swimming, dancing, gym etc, then you'll do it more, and this will tackle insulin resistance and reduce weight.
