Just saying hiya
I'm a parent of an 8 year old girl, 2.5 weeks into her diagnosis of T1DM with a bit of a rubbish time and hospital admission. We're currently on MDIs and a Libre 2 but hoping we'll be able to swap to a pump at some point.

I'm here to get as much help as I possibly can from you wonderful lot, you're so knowledgeable, I've had a lurk for a while but thought I'd come and join properly.

I'm still very shell shocked, my girl is being AMAZING and (for now) very accepting of the changes and lack of spontaneous eating.
Hope to chat soon ❤️

Hello and welcome to the forum 🙂 Please ask as many questions as you want and need. We are all here to help when and where we can.

Welcome to the forum @Feral Beryl's mum

Glad you have found us! We have a number of experienced parents of kids with diabetes on the forum including @Bronco Billy @Thebearcametoo @Sally71 @stephknits - who have been through supporting their children through various different stages of life with T1.

Well done for de-lurking. Hope the forum provides you with a friendly and supportive place to ask questions, pick up tips and ideas, or just have a good moan at the frustrations and fickleness of it all!

Hi and welcome. My kid was diagnosed at the same age so happy to share any info of our experience. There’s a lot to get your head around but you will adapt. Lean on your diabetes team. Don’t hesitate to call them out of hours etc if needed. Even a few years in we still sometimes have to do that.

Oh - and remember - they (and we!) are there/here for both of you, not 'just' your daughter!

Plus - why the Spanish greeting? Or should I be asking eg Cómo estás - though not having a Spanish keyboard immediately to hand I can't punctuate that question properly !

Hello, welcome to the forum! It’s tough at the beginning but it does get easier, honest! So much to learn but you do get used to it. Ask anything you like, nothing is too silly, we’ve all been there before. We’ve been dealing with this for 9 years now, my daughter was 6 at diagnosis and is now 15 and can hardly remember what it was like to not have diabetes. That’s not to say we don’t still get the occasional day where it all goes wrong and we get very fed up with it, you learn how to manage these things though.

I’d recommend a pump, they aren’t a magic fix-all and require a lot of hard work, but once you’ve got used to them they do make a lot of things easier. That said, you have to find what works best for you and your daughter and then ignore what everyone else is doing! Good luck 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Feral Beryl's mum . I am glad that you have found us.

It is good to hear that you have been offered a pump. It is worth finding out which ones are on offer in your area. These choices often include a patch pump as well as a tubeless one. Some will link up with sensors, and give alarms when levels go too high or too low. Lots of choices and lots of experience to tap into on here.

it is a lot to take in at the start but it definitely gets easier. Whatever questions arise, just ask. Nothing is considered silly on here.
