Hi Everyone,

My name is Sookie and I was diagnosed with T1 in 2003. Unfortunately I have not been under control due to being in denial. I recently had some scary news from my Doctor and it gave me the "shake up" I needed. Now I want to do everything I can to bring my health under control.

I'm hoping to get some advice and maybe make some friend on the way 😱

Hi Sookie, welcome to the forum 🙂 It can help a great deal being amongst people who understand and can give you the benefit of their experience and support, so well done for finding us! 🙂 If you have any concerns or questions then please ask away, or if you just want a good old rant, that's allowed too.

Education and support are what you need to help you back to good control, and hopefully we can help you with both. Looking forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Welcome T1Life.
Has your doctor offered any education courses, such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating), which many people who use MDI (Multiple Daily Insulin / Injections) or basal bolus insulin regime find very helpful? Apologies if your already know these, but I don't like using abbreviations without giving full terms.

Hi Sookie. One of the best things to get you on the straight and narrow is sharing with other diabetics.

You'll find this a good place to get you motivated.

Welcome to the forum Sookie. 🙂

Take some time to have a look in all the sections here. Some are more light-hearted than others and feel free to start joining in.

I hope that we can help.

Hello and welcome to the forum, I hope things do get better for you. What Insulin/s are you on? Sheena x :D

Hi Sookie

Welcome to the forum. Good luck with regaining control x

Hi Sookie,

Welcome to the forum I'm sure you'll find the support you are looking for from (and this is important) people who are facing similar challenges.

I've been type 1 since an operation in May. I found this site 2 - 3 months ago and have found it very good for picking up ideas on how to attempt to control the blood sugar levels and how to idenfity and treat hypos. The feedback I've received to my questions and the nuggets of information picked up from other threads has had more impact than any help from the NHS where I've yet to see the same diabetic professional more than once. To be truthful I was drifting and felt almost out of the system. If I hadn't found this forum then its not inconceivable that in 5 years time I could be posting a similar message to yours.

My (early) new years resolution is that this needs to change starting on Monday (the 20th) when I get my first Hb1ac result. This forum has convinced me that irrespective of how bad / good the test is, I need to take more control so I'll push for better / more regular support. Hopefully this plus the forum will keep me on the straight and narrow.

Hi Sookie I'm a newbie too Type2 Good luck with getting yourself sorted out xx

Woah! Was not expecting so many welcome messages, thanks everyone 🙂

Erm to answer some the questions, I haven't been on a DAFNE course but I do know the jist of it. Just today I visited my dietician after several years and she went over what I needed to know, I believe she also helps with the DAFNE course in my area.

I'm on Lantus and Novarapid for my injections, however today my doctor prescribed me Metformin (hope i spelt that right) I have to take 2 tablets a day and take my injections as normal. Something about me being T1.5 and insulin resistent??

My most recent Hb1ac was 11.2% 😱 The Doctor did reassure me that this can be reduced within months, so I have a plan given to me by the doctor andthe dietician and hopefully in May when I see them again my results will be in single digits.

Thank you again!

Welcome and well done for deciding to take control.

I have seen others who are T1.5 and should imagine they will be very useful to you.

Personally, I joined Slimming World to shift some weight and it is going really well.

Hi Sookie, I'm a 1.5 who has been on pills for the past year and am due to move to insulin soon because, being an awkward cuss, I can't tolerate the meds. There's all kinds of diabetics in here and you're bound to find someone with relevant experience to support you. Welcome in and well done on deciding to bite the bullet.
