Hi everyone, just signed up to the forum having been diagnosed as type2 two weeks ago.
Like most newbies I was shocked at being dianosed, but since reading this site feel a little more settled for the future & living with Type 2.
To start I 've been prescribed metformin x 1 a day building up to 4 day by week 8.

I do have one question....I have noticed that since I've been on Metformin my close up vision has slightly deteriorated, I have pair prescription glasses which I'd use ocassionally but now seem to rely on them more! is this normal?

All the best.

Welcome to the forum! 🙂

My eyesight went quite weird for a couple of weeks whilst my levels settled down. You should find that it sorts itself out. If not, go and see your GP/DSN. Meanwhile, don't go out and get any new glasses until your eyes have settled down (your GP can advise how long to wait).

Hello and wellcome to the site. They are a great bunch of peeps on here. No question to small or silly, I should know I have asked most of them. As for the eye issue I find that if my blood sugars are high my vision goes blurry. Put your mind at rest and ask your gp or dsn. Look forward to getting to know you more

Hi MG63, welcome to the forum 🙂 As Andy says, it can take a little while for your eyesight to return to normal after you have been diagnosed, so don't go getting any new glasses! It's not really a side effect of metformin, rather a sign that your blood sugar levels are improving. Have a look in the 'Useful Links' thread at the top of the Newbies section for some recommendations for reading - the Gretchen Becker book is a 'must have' for newly-diagnosed Type 2s! 🙂 Has your doctor given you a blood glucose meter and prescribed strips? Using one is the best way to learn how different foods affect you so that you can manage your diabetes well without having to restrict your diet too much.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll do our best to help! 🙂

I'd recommend that you start keeping a diary of your food each day, this will be helpful in the future. Doctors are often reluctant to precribe testing strips for the meters as they are expensive (around ?25 for 50 strips, although the NHS pays around ?15). If you can afford it, it would be worth getting a meter now so that you can start to record your blood sugar levels and start gaining knowledge about the effect of different foods on you. Armed with this information you may have a stronger case for getting the strips prescribed if he/she can see that you are making good use of the information in making modifcations to your diet.

Also. check out the GL Diet book recommendations, as this will explain a lot about the best food combinations to eat to ensure a slow, even release of glucose into your blood. If you're eating white bread, then change to seeded/multigrain bread - white bread converts to glucose faster than pure sugar! 😱

Welcome!!

Hi MG,
Welcome to the forum - glad you found us!!I'm sure you will find all the peeps here very welcoming and helpful and I can see you have had many replies already!
You're doing great (& I know that cos we spoke earlier 😉 )
Keep up the good work and work on getting a meter so you can see whats going on with your levels.
Its normal to feel anxious about a diagnosis like this, everyone does, but I know when you get it under control you will feel so much better.
Keep posting!
