History of Diabetes

This is an interesting summary:

It’s been recognised as an ailment for centuries (was it the ancient Greeks or ancient Egyptians who would sip urine for sweetness).

And the 17th C’s memorable moniker “the p*ssing evil” which was used as title of a book on the history of diabetes.

A client of mine knew people in the family of RD Lawrence (including his daughter or granddaughter I think?) and gifted me a signed copy of RD Lawrence’s biography “Diabetes, Insulin, and the life of RD Lawrence”. It was a fascinating read!

Lawrence (who lived with T1 himself) and HG Wells between them were pivotal in establishing the British Diabetic Association, now known as Diabetes UK.

Noticing ants around pee was another clue in the “olden times?” Also in the olden times. Witches gave the sugar sickness??

I think the earliest recorded diabetes treatment is in an Egyptian papyrus dated around 1650 BCE.

The papyrus suggests downing “a measuring glass filled with Water from the Bird pond, Elderberry, Fibres of the asit plant, Fresh Milk, Beer-Swill, Flower of the Cucumber, and Green Dates.”

A bit surprised that I haven't seen any social media grifters trying to sell this, but this is possibly because nobody seems to know what the "asit plant" was & it wouldn't work if you got this wrong (sarc). Or perhaps somebody is busily formulating a keto version (sarc+).

@Eddy Edson any particular Bird pond or can I use the nearby bird bath?

I read they also were into “plastic surgery” too. (Skin grafting after battle injuries?)
