Highs after watching a film

When ever I go to cinema, whether I eat or not, I always go high.

Well, I found my answer. Was reading the book 'think like a pancreas' and he says even just the excitement of a good movie can raise your sugars in the same way other stress does. This explains a lot ( I love going to the cinema).

So, I'm doing an experiment. My sugars are at the moment 7.2. I'm not going to eat anything and will only drink water
Going to see 'Before you go to sleep' and I'm going to give myself 4 units of rapid, as I would if I were stressed.

I have skittles on me in case of hypo.

Going to see if I can watch a film and not come out with sugar readings of 15.

Will let you know.

I did wonder if anyone else has experienced this? I do love the cinema and go nearly all the time. At least weekly.

I could say if I sat down for 1-2 hours that's what happens. I have to be ill to sit still 😱

not noticed that, but enjoyed before i go to sleep - hope you did too!🙂

I'm a designer by job - I design resources for teachers. Unfortunetly that does mean a lot of sitting during the day for me. So I've calculated that in my background insulin.

I have something a bit similar, it's related to the noise level. We have two cinemas near enough to get to. One of them I find very stressful because the volume is much too high, the other one is fine. It took me a while to work it out because I only ever went higher than normal in the loud cinema, and I don't eat food in the cinema usually. I have extremely sensitive hearing and I can't go to music events indoors because the sound level is always too high, and fireworks displays are my idea of hell. I asked the DSN and she said it was most likely the volume because it stresses me out. I'd guess a scary film would send me through the roof because I find those very stressful too! Enjoy the film, I loved the book 🙂

Your DSN said what? My endo still struggles to get her head around hot weather = lower BG / insulin needs. Wow!

Success. My sugar levels were actually lower than when I went in. 4.3.

Interesting what you say about sound. I'm also very sound sensitive and it causes me problems. I'm autistic as well. I went to a different cinema than normal, and actually this cinema is quieter than the other one. The other cinema is closer, but when I'm in Portsmouth I like coming to the Vue.

Hmm. Maybe that is the issue

My son's BG tends to shoot up if he's playing a video game - but not always (of course - D can't just be nice and predictable!). 😉

I was expecting her to laugh, but no she was in there with the stress thing, and the heat. She's not buying the Colin conundrum explanation (nocturnal pancreas) but she does refer to nerve damage hand as Timmy, and uses the term Colin conundrum so it's only a matter of time 😉

Could be, my Goddaughter is very sensitive to sound and we were told it was the Sperge (or Aspergers to the normal folk out there). The first time we took her to the cinema she lay on the floor with her hands over her ears. It must be fairly common because the cinema has recently started to do Autism friendly cinema sessions and one of the components is lower volume and something about fewer variations in tone (didn't quite understand that bit). Lauren takes her son to those because she doesn't want him to miss out on the films but finds the cinema very challenging. I think I just have freakishly acute hearing 🙂. Well done on the lower BG!

I guess it's the old fight or flight response that comes with stress or danger, stress hormones cause big surges of fat and sugar in the blood so this extra energy can get to cells. In the a sense or impaired output of insulin with diabetes this extra energy hangs around and causes your blood sugar to go high as it can't be absorbed into the cells.....
