In nine months since my diagnosis, I have only had a handful of post food spikes over 3 points and generally my BG is well under control. Staying at my daughters, I succumbed to have a spicy fish cake with salad, knowing that the mashed potato and breadcrumbs would likely give me a spike over 3. I read 6.1 pre food and was taken aback but not entirely surprised to get a reading of 12.1 after 2 hours. A spike of 6 was a timely and sharp reminder to stick with the food I know and can tolerate.

Funny that, I had something similar tonight, though not as high a spike. I decided a little garlic bread might be nice and got a spike from 6.1 to 10, the highest BG I have measured since I have been testing and shockingly, higher than chippy fish and chips gave me! 😱

That is a fair old spike for a spicy fish cake Browser. Clearly your ‘avoid at all cost’ food seems to be mash (can’t see the amount of breadcrumbs used causing such a problem though).

You’re bang on there, Amigo. To be honest, I think that’s the first time I’ve had mash since diagnosis. I’m fine with small portions of whole boiled, small baked and roasted potatoes. Even a few homemade thick chips aren’t out of the question.

It could be that mashed potato is something that you cannot tolerate. I fidn the same with oats. Perhaps try it again sometime and see if it affects you in the same way. A food diary may be useful for this. Looks like you are doing well with weight loss etc. you should be proud of yourself. Well done. 🙂

Thanks, happydog. I’ll probably wait a wee while before I wrestle with mash again. I don’t keep an accurate food diary, but I make a note of the food which appears to be no,no.

Seems to depend on what an individual can tolerate. Most people here can tolerate bacon and sausage. I had some and went from 5.9 to 12.4 in two hours so have stopped eating them. I can eat porridge though.

Porridge is not a bad swap for bacon and sausage. I’d love to tolerate porridge but alas not. Mind you, I’ve found a really tasty muesli which seems to be fine - Lidl’s ‘Simply Sumptuous Really Nutty Muesli’.

I have just started shopping in Lidl as they have opened a fairly large one in my town. Shop at Tesco too. Will have a go at that Muesli and see how I do.

I think we all have our own ‘food Achilles heel’. Mine is white bread. I could eat a portion of fish and chips with less effect than 2 slices of white bread! 😱

I meant to add that I eat this muesli in small portions of about 50gms. but I add some berries like strawberries or blueberries or some sliced banana.
