Well my sugars have been on a gluco-rollercoaster for the past few weeks, no idea why, and they looked like they were coming under control until about tea time each day, but for the past few days my morning waking sugars have been steadily increasing...

Thurs: 5.4
Fri: 6.6
Sat: 9.1
Sun: 10.2
Mon: 13.5!!

Does anyone have any suggestions??

Also, I checked my ketones this morning and I had a trace when my BM was 13.5 but then just tested now and I don't have any and my sugars are still 13.7. Am drinking LOTS to try and flush out of my system but can't get my levels down, despite doing a correction dose with my morning insulin... Eating the same thing for breakfast (shreddies, which I suspect is not the best but seeing a dietician this afternoon to discuss as only just been told about carb counting, but should have the same affect on my sugars at least right?)

Xx

Any chance you are coming down with something Vix? Or are getting stressed about something?

Either of those can have an effect and may mean you need to temporarily increase your basal insulin (as well as correcting the highs). If your general insulin requirement is raised, as it can be during periods of stress/illness then some of what you are injecting for meals/corrections will be getting used to cover 'background', so will fall short, if you see what I mean!

Thanks Mike, I was wondering that but I don't feel unwell or particularly stressed apart from maybe the thought of going to the hospital (only to see dietician)

I never know when to increase my basal as get scared of hypos and my diabetes team isn't too supportive at the moment and I can never get hold of anyone so worry if I change anything and all goes wrong I can't get in touch with my DSN... Too late to change my basal today as do it once in a morning but might add even more correction to my lunch bolus dose and then increase basal tomorrow if still high.

xx

Best thing I *ever* picked up from the DOC/diabetes forums was about systematically TESTING my basal level. It doesn;t have to have been an illness/stress that caused it... Your basal might just have changed!

I have no idea why clinics do not teach basal testing to everyone on basal:bolus (they all do when people go on insulin pumps!)

I thought my D was completely 'random' every so often for almost 20 years, but what I've learned since I started testing basal is that 9 times out of 10 when my levels go all over the shop it is down to the fact that my basal will be a unit or two out.

This is a good overview of the basic technique (half way down): http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120

Thanks Mike 🙂

I'm seeing my DSN on Fri to change to levemir so will ask her about the basal testing then as you're right, it doesn't make sense that this isn't taught as standard!!

i was going to ask what mike did about you being ill or stressed.

you arent stressed about getting your HbA1c down are you?

how much are you taking for your corrective dose? & whats your unit conversion? mines 1 unit - 10grams unless im off it

Well I was stressed about having to waste 24 mins finding somewhere to park at the hospital, followed by massive parking charges to see the dietician for the biggest waste of time! Yes Laura I probably am stressing about my hba1c but no more today than the last few days...

My corrective does is 1:3 and I checked that with the dietician today and that's correct as far as we can tell... My bolus is 1:5 for breakfast and then 1:7.5 for lunch/dinner which seems quite a lot but if I lower them then I go sky high!

xx

There's definitely something wrong today... as my levels have been at 13 for most of the afternoon, despite going to 6.7 after lunch and then shooting back up and staying there :( xx

Hmmm that's odd.
I had a thought but don't want to ask it so openly, ill pm you

Do excuse me if this is a really stupid question, but can T1s be insulin resistant?

I think we can be but we can be sensitive to insulin

Good question LeeLee, and I genuinely didn't know the answer... haven't had this problem with my control in the last 18 years that I remember but something is seriously going wrong with my body at the moment so nothing would surprise me :( xx
