Hi @Totalwar. Those numbers seem to be a bit high and I would calling whoever is looking after your care now rather than waiting till the end of the month to see what they have to say.

Hope you get some answers @Totalwar

Those levels don’t sound comfortable - are you getting symptoms of high BG? Tiredness, irritability, thirst or increased urination?

Yes to all lucky I rang today I was told end October that I should see one but the nurse told me on the phone end of December.Anyway see them tomorrow said they put me on slow release insulin once a day.

I seen the Community diabetic nurse today and been put on slow release insulin and later I be put back on a weekly hormone one and still have to take my tablets as well.

The background insuli otherwise known as Basal insulin should help but it’s likely it will need tweaking ,probably upwards as they usually start us off conservatively as we all need differing amounts.
do you know which one it is.

A couple of years ago when I was started out on a Basal Insulin i continued taking Gliclazide.

Do keep in close contact with your community diabetes nurse as as I said earlier some tweaking may well be required.

Can I just enquire what the hormone injection you keep referring to is, and what is it for?

Abasaglar 14 units to start with then increase by two units if sugar level above 8 fasting.

Trulicity eg: dulaglutide.once weekly.

Abasaglar (previously known as Abasria) is biosimilar to Sanofi’s Lantus as it has the same active ingredient, insulin glargine. Abasaglar has been developed by Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim and will directly compete against Sanofi’s Lantus. Biosimilars are officially approved products which are highly similar to other medicines.
What is Abasaglar?
Abasaglar, which was approved in Europe in September 2014, is a once-daily injectable drug that can increase long-lasting control of blood glucose levels. It is taken once daily at the same time of each day and will be available as a 100 units/mL solution.
The drug is a long-acting insulin analogue and clinical trials show it have a similar profile to Lantus with duration of to 24 hours. Side effects and efficacy have also shown to be approximately equal to Lantus.
Reports suggest that Abasaglar will be approximately 25 per cent cheaper for the NHS than Lantus or Toujeo.
Abasaglar can treat adults, adolescents and children aged two and older, while it can be administered alongside oral medication in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The drug became the first insulin treatment to be accepted through the European Medicine Agency’s biosimilar pathway, and its developers are confident that biosimilars could lead to increased treatment options for diabetes.
A spokesperson for Lilly said: “Biosimilars will help expand available therapeutic options to address individual patient needs and should provide additional value beyond cost savings. We anticipate they will be priced competitively as part of a broad continuum of treatment options.”

Sorry to hear this @Totalwar

We have had members on larger doses (taken in multiple injections) - I think @ukjohn was one. He may have some ideas if the large injections are painful?

There are also ‘double strength’ u200 insulins where you can get the same units with a smaller volume of insulin.

What sorts of things are you eating? Are there any changes you could make to your menu to improve your BG outcomes?

I was on very high doses, Novorapid 160 units a day and insulartad 200 units a day, but since I have moved into my flat in February this year, my insulin as dropped down well, I put it down to looking after myself food wise and moving about more looking after myself instead of relying on others, my insulin doses now are Novorapid 60 units a day and Insulatard 100 units a day, also lost 1 stone in weight without trying. 🙂

Would it be worth identifying just one meal for which you could choose to reduce your carbohydrates. First you would need to find out how many you are currently eating. You can then reduce these by making swaps or reducing the portion sizes. I found the easiest meal to sort was breakfast as I tend to have the same every day, and it was easy to make a change. Other meals tend to be more varied.

I have also been through depression, which for me was associated with my Diabetes. I took some time tonseek help but was so glad when I eventually did.

Breakfast is easy for me low carbs.

That is a good start. What do you have? I am always after ideas for changes to mine?

For other meals I find it useful to think of this idea.
Veg that grow
  • Below the ground are high carb (potatoes, swedes, ..)
  • Above the ground are medium carbs (peas, beans, ...)
  • On the ground they are low carb (celery, lettuce)
I use this to do swaps to reduce the carbs.

Keep in touch
