I am caring for my husband who has been struggling since lock down and being on furlough for 6 months. His doctors have not been much help and I have seen his readings jump to 25.2 again this week but unsure where to go for help. He has lost a vast amount of weight so we are trying to bulk him up but need help with foods he can take to get his weight back up please ? I have managed to get him a blood test booked but even that was a month away when I had to book and not until 21st April :(

25.2 is very high. Drinking plenty of water will help but I would think about contacting 111.

Welcome @colea 🙂 Sorry your husband is having problems. Can you tell us a little more? What type of diabetes does he have? Is he on any medication for it?

As @adrian1der says, 25.2 is very high, and whatever his ‘type’ he would be best speaking to his GP.

Tbh with levels that high I think he needs to be seen ASAP by diabetes specialists at the hospital.
What type of diabetes does your husband have.
What diabetes medications is your husband on.
Was his weight loss unexpected .
Sorry for all the questions , it’s just that they will help us give you more appropriate advise.

Hi Thank you been a worry and still is time - He is D2 (Family inherited) been on Metformin SR 1000mg twice per day/Gliclazide 80mg 1.5 twice per day along with Statin. Trying to see a doctor is impossible but I did manage to beg for a phone appointment the other week to which the doctor requested bloods but not until 21st April. 25.2 was 4.30pm yesterday and I took them again at 5.30am this morning to which they came down to 17.9 but still too high and he drinks lots of water

Echo what the others have said, I'd call 111 and ask their advice xx

At 17.9 he is still too high. Please contact 111 for advice.

Speak to the doctor again @colea 25.2 is too high and so is 17.9. These high sugars might be contributing to his weight loss, or it could be something else. Tell the doctor how high his sugars are and that he’s feeling unwell. His meds might need adjusting or other things might need checking. If you can’t get through to his GP, ask to speak to the diabetes nurse and explain your concerns.

How long has he been Type 2? The sudden weight loss is a worry and may in fact be late onset Type 1 which can react to Type 2 meds for some time so please call 111, do you have a way to test for ketones? xx

Hi. It sounds like he may be T1 and not T2. Insist that the surgery refer him to the diabetes clinic or organise GAD and C-Peptide tests themselves for T1. Yes, call 111 if the surgery won't help. To help manage the weight loss have plenty of proteins and fats but DO NOT increase the carbs. It may be worth buying some Ketostix to check his ketone levels. High ketones together with high BS can be very dangerous. BTW you have a right to be seen by a GP, urgently, if needed. Ask to speak to the surgery Practice Manager if needed.

Not meaning to alarm you but GP advised me that, for readings going above 20 for any amount of time, I should present to A&E. Fingers crossed his levels come down soon.

Hi Colea, welcome to the forum.

Just wanted to pop by and check in with how you're both doing.

As kindly mentioned above, his numbers are quite high and really needs to be taken care of ASAP. It's important for them to look into why he is loosing weight not just how to bulk him up. Protein shakes can sometimes be really high in sugars/ carbs so double check them if possible.

So glad that you were able to speak with 111, were they able to offer any advice? Just a reminder that you're also welcome to give us a call on 0345 123 2399 for further support.

Protein shakes to gain weight? Your doctor does seem to be out of his depth.
Hopefully you are now in contact with someone who is going to be more helpful - if I was a gambler I'd say, from your description of the state of things that it is a racing certainty that your DH is in need of insulin, and that type two might actually prove a non starter.

@colea . I hope you get the help you so obviously need need your husband .
When you can please let us know how you get on.
