High protein in urine

Hello,

I have very high proteins in my urine, (sorry not sure of the amount) but my GP is concerned. Has anyone else experienced this and is there anything that has helped you lower the levels?

My recent kidney eGFR levels have dropped from 58 to 48 and I am booked in for a ultrasound/CT scan.

I do take Lisonpiril 5mg for high blood pressure, but really wanted to stop this as my reads are usually 110/70, but realised now this also helps with reducing the proteins and with my kidneys.

Hi! The first time I showed protein in my urine was 1968. I have been on Lisinopril for about 20 years. It was dropped in favour of Bicorporal (beta blocker in 2020) but a low dose was added for kidney protection later the same year. Stopping it can case a nasty rebound effect unless it coincides with significant changes in weight, exercise and diet. The two hints I can give you (although I realise they may not be applicable) are minimise salt intake and not to blow out on protein foods.

The main drugs that have negative effects on eGFR are diuretics. I have been on them twice. Last year I was put on them because of the macerated wounds on my foot. It did not really help but my eGFR plunged to 35% from 68% which was really worrying. After stopping them it slowly recovered to 70%.

Hope you recover some or all of your lost eGFR.

Thank you this very helpful, my dosage of Lisonipril has reduced from 10mg to 5mg and I did stop it all together for a few weeks, the reason for this was I suffer from high blood pressure so say 140/90 but I would go down to low blood pressure which was an issue, but more concerning was the drop which would go down to 90/50 and my head would spin, this happened for a few years, to and from GP and hospital all no help.
Then I found out about side affects of Canagilflozin which I started a few years ago and my dosage was upped from 100mg to 300mg. Major side effect is.. . Low blood pressure, so now down to 100mg and my low blood pressure is not an issue and even now go to the gym.

I will reduce salt intake, but need to work out a way to reduce the protein bit.

Well done for getting you eGFR back to 70!

Sorry to hear about the protein in your urine @Newbie777

There’s a write-up of kidneys, treatments, and options here

I am not on a specific low protein diet just regular portions (no seconds). Years ago I used to have a pub's mixed grill - 10oz steak, chicken breast, pork chop and jumbo sausage with chips and veg! I never could make a real indent on the chips which was enough for a family of four! 🙂 A definite NO-NO are protein shakes. My ex's daughters' partner got into body building and really got into them. At just past 40 he has had two kidney transplants!

Don't do shakes, I have primarily fish at lunchtimes and chicken in the evening. Sometimes I will have a cheese and mushroom omelette in the evening. When I go out I will have a kebab with salad and limited sauce, no rice or nan bread. I think consistency is the key but I personally that you can are allowed to break the rules now and then, this may help trick the body too as it will adjust to the low carbs etc

Hello,
My results have come in..
Urine creatinine 5.3
Urine albumin 18.1
Urine albumin:creatinine ratio 3.42.

Big improvement from before, these were. ...
Urine creatinine 3.7 (low is now good)
Urine albumin 47.5
! Urine albumin:creatinine ratio 12.84

I presume still high, but I am happy that I am going the right way.
