Carly had chickenpox again!! now recovering but her level are still high 2 weeks after. Her DSN said its normal to be high for up to month, it takes diabetics longer to recover so I wonder if anyone experienced this
 
Hi Ruth

It's important to give more insulin during illness to keep the BGs down to as near normal as possible.

They can run very high on the normal doses, so we just up the doses until they bring the BGs down.

As far as I know, recovery times should be normal as long as the BGs are controlled. If they're allowed to run high, then recovery will be a lot longer.

Yes, I think the DSN might have phrased it better if she'd suggested that insulin requirements may be higher for up to a month, not levels! 🙂

Can't offer any experience really, as I haven't really been ill (touch wood) since diagnosis, just the odd sniffle and feeling under the weather. Hope Carly's levels settle soon 🙂

My Tia had chickhen pox for the 2nd time(both times when she had her big Danceforce shows) but she is not Diabetic. It's sounds as though she may need a little bit more Insulin to help her get to more reasonable levels, but it may take a little while. I hope she feels better very soon. Best wishes Sheena
 
Hi, oh dear poor Carly, and you! You're not alone with the high readings we are having a right day as Millie has full head cold. I have been giving her 20 % extra bolus with her meals and put the basal on the pump up at first by 20% now 30%, think may even increase that further, not had a reading below 10 today. She is definitely more insulin resistive at the moment and judging from other bugs she has had it can last into week 2. Has DSN give you advice on insulin requirements or you left to it ?
 
I'm using a new meter combo that advices how many units I can give her, she still get high but I'm glad to say she's more back to normal in past 2 days 🙂
 
Hanmillmum: hope you managed to get Millie's level down by now, don't give up or stress and you'll get there 🙂
 
Hi Ruth.

Does the combo take into account the illness?

When we're ill we often need a lot more insulin than if we were just correcting a high.

I'm pleased Carly is feeling better.🙂

Yes it's do account for illness but Carly don't look ill, she was very active throughout her chickenpox so it was difficult to decide as we were on holiday last week, she previously had 2 fits and I daren't risk her going too low ( at average she only take 2 and half units every time) an unit would make a difference!

Wow. That is a low dose. I can see how difficult it is for you. At least things will seem easier in years to come. 🙂

Sounds to me like she would really benefit from the fine control of a pump, it's almost impossible to make adjustments by injection when requirements are so low (I know this because I have been on 3 units of lantus in the past and can only adjust in single units - 33%! 😱)
 
Hi thanks, got things under control with Millie (at the moment🙄) Glad to hear Carly improved. 🙂 Must say the pump is a god send when faced with illness, Millie too has very small requirements for basal (0.1 -0.225 per hour over 24 hrs) and bolus are usually around 1.5-2u with food. I know you were considering a pump before, have you heard anything?

Yes Carly have been offered to have a pump, they are looking for a pump alarm alert for me (im deaf) before it's go ahead so for now I have the combo meter to get used to it 🙂

Yes fingers crossed they can work something out for you soon, keep us posted.

Must say though never used the alerts/alarms on pump other than when we had use of the CGM for a few days. Never get anywhere near to a low reservoir due to her small insulin requirements or low battery, check same all the time and not had a blockage.
