High glucose levels

At risk of diabetes
Hi all i had a routine blood test and i now have to see a doctor as my glucose levels are high, plus i am already on statins for high cholestrol , Im not sure what they will recommend, are they likely to put me on diabetic medication straight away or send me for more tests etc
 
It really depends on just what your glucose levels are, Over 48mmol/mol puts you in the diabetic range so depending on how much over that you are will depend on whether they will want to put you on medication immediately or give you a chance to address it with changes to diet and exercise and how motivated they feel you are to make the necessary changes. If just over then hopefully they will give you the opportunity to make those changes for 3 months to see what progress you can make. But even with meds you will still need to look to reducing carbohydrates by reducing portion size or cutting out high carb foods. Losing weight if you need to will also help and a low carb diet will help with that.
There is plenty of information on here to advice you about what foods you should avoid but basing your meals on meat, fish, eggs, dairy and non starchy vegetables, some fruits are fine.
Let us know how you get on and if you can find what your HbA1C result is that will help people to give you tailored suggestions.

Thank you for your help I'll report back when I get my results next week. I have been trying to lose weight doing intermittent fasting and so far I've lost 7llbs by only eating in a 6 hour window . Now I'm wondering if that has affected my glucose result

I would have thought that should have had a positive effect as long as what you have been eating has not been carb heavy. Your HbA1C result is an average over 3 months ish so it will also depend on when you started to do your fasting regime if very recent, wouldn't have had much impact but should at your next test in 3 months. When first diagnosed you should be getting a repeat HbA1C after 3 months. Also eye screening and foot monitoring. Weight loss looks good so far. Whatever dietary regime you choose it has to be sustainable and you have to enjoy the meals you are having.
 
Thank you it's most helpful it's a lot to take in and I've been reading up on low carbs diets and the info on here . You mention a 3 month average . I've only had one blood test are they likely to test me again before medication (if needed) sorry to bombard you but it's been a wake up call and it's making me look at my diet
 
You usually require to have 2 tests with a result of 48 & over before you have a diagnosis so I would have thought they would test you again soonish. If you're not far over the 48 I would ask to try the diet/exercise route before medication. Good luck!

Hope the appointment goes well @Elkieja - let us know what they recommend as an initial approach.

It does seem to very from surgery to surgery. Some Drs are ire keen to provide medication from the outset so that people’s diet and lifestyle choices get a bit of a helping hand.

Others prefer to offer people a period of months to see how they get on without meds.

In part it seems to depend on how far into the diabetes range your HbA1c result is sitting.

I wouldn’t worry too much if medication is recommended, even if you’d prefer to manage without in the long term. We have members with T2 who have been on various meds, but then have gradually get themselves into a position where they no longer need them. But there's no problem if your body needs a bit of a helping hand.

Diabetes is very individual. And what matters is that you use the most appropriate strategies and support for you and your body. 🙂
