Hi guys, a bit cofused with the high/low GI situation.

If I eat something that peaks very high BG but is near normal at 2 hours, is that bad for me, as opposed to say something that has a much lower BG increase but is still high at 2 hours, lowering at say 4 hours.

Or are they both bad and I should get as small a peak as possible with near normal at 2 hours?

You should be looking for something that doesn't raise your BG by more than 3 mmol/l from your pre-meal level at any time (ideally, but not easy to achieve!). So, slow climb in BG to a not very high level, then gradual decline to return to your pre-meal level. 🙂 In your example they would both be bad, because both would have caused a big spike, although the point of Low GI is that it doesn't produce a big spike (unless it happens to be something that you, as an individual don't tolerate well).

Thanks Northerner, (me too by the way🙂), that 3mmol/l is new to me and explains the perspective of it all.

I would imagine that if a low GI is spiking high at 2 or 3 hours, then possibly a reduced portion would be good to try, to see if it comes in at a mor reasonable level.🙂

You can also add protein or some fat (pref unsaturated or polyunsaturated) to lower GI. If you eat say, a poached egg on toast, the normal 1 or 2 hour spike can come much later due to the egg.

But requires personal experimentation and lots of advice from fellow T2s.

Thanks Robster65, all beginning to fall into place a little more each day.
