Exposure to dim light at night increased the negative effects of a high fat diet in mice -- leading to more weight gain, reduced glucose tolerance, and altered insulin secretion than was seen in control mice, a study found.
"Body mass was elevated by [dim light at night] and by [a high-fat diet] within the first week of experimental conditions," wrote Laura K. Fonken, BS, of Ohio State University, in Columbus, and colleagues in the October 1 issue of Endocrinology.
Mice exposed to both high-fat diet and dim light at night also showed increases in body and fat pad mass beyond that of the control mice.
