Failing to tackle mental health problems among people with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease is costing the NHS billions every year, researchers have said.
Those with long-term health problems are two to three times more likely to also suffer mental health issues than the general population. This can include depression and anxiety, or dementia in the case of older people. Evidence suggests at least 30% of all people with a long-term condition also have a mental health problem.
More than 15 million people in England - 30% - have one or more long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, asthma, and increasingly HIV/Aids and some cancers.
