Hi I wonder if someone can help me out please, when I got up this morning my BS was 9.3 and after a breakfast of wholemeal toast and touch of maramalade and a glass of hot water I jumped to 15.7 one hour later I am wondering why this happening?

Your initial reading was quite high (particularly for a fasting one), and wholemeal toast and marmelade are full of carbohydrate, which will raise your blood sugar - one slice of toast contains around 15-20g of carbs which I as a T1 would need at least 3-4u to cover, and that's before the marmelade, which is essentially just sugar anyway.

All of those carbs will go straight into your blood sugar and raise it - and as you were running high anyway, that's why you've gone really high. A better breakfast would probably be something with very few carbs but plenty of fat and protein - say an omelette. This will have a minimal impact on your blood sugar, encourage your body to metabolise body fat and will keep you feeling full for much longer.

If you've been able to eat muesli before without suffering a large BG spike, then go for it. I would say though that most people would find muesli little better than bread in terms of their blood sugar - at the end of it, muesli is a bowl of grain, which is essentially a bowl of sugar.

Hi,

You did not eat anything to slow down the absorption of the carbs, it was as though you gave yourself a sugar hit.
Try to make sure that you have protein and fat with your carbs to slow down the absorption. Egg and mushrooms on the toast would have been a better option.

If you cannot be bothered or have little time to cook in the mornings, make up a large spanish omelette, cut it up and reheat a piece in the microwave while you are waiting for your toast to cook. It will last a few days in the fridge.
