Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Morning everyone and hope you are all well and keeping safe,
I was diagnosed in January 2020, so I still haven't got my meds sorted, I started on 1000 a day and as this was making no difference at all my doctor put it up to 2000 a day. I am not due for another blood test until the end of April. I only test my bloods in the morning and they are anything from 17 to 23. I am extremely thirsty still, my urination is getting better (not wetting myself in the street), but the tiredness and the weight loss is the thing I cannot cope with. I only found out last week that I have a Vitamin D deficiency and this also makes you tired. The weird thing is I am eating so much, yet losing the weight (this has slowed down) I was 14 stone and now I am 11 stone 2lb. I just feel like I have no strength and my muscles have gone and my skin is all crepey. Sorry to keep going on about this, but I wonder if anyone else had this at the beginning and did it get better?

Did you have a c-peptide test do you know? Your high levels will be making you feel terrible and the weight loss, thirst etc is all a part of that. Have you had your ketones tested? Please give your doctor a call and list your symptoms. It may be that you need some insulin to get your levels under control and they need to clarify that you are type 2 and not type 1 (or one of the other sorts).

Please get back to your Gp ASAP, as I too am concerned that you may have another type of diabetes. Many GPs and practice nurses still believe that T1 only develops in childhood and have never even heard of LADA latent auto immune diabetes in adults , it’s similar to T1 but usually develops slowly and initially responds to T2 treatments.

They need to do different blood tests to determine which type you have so that you get the right treatment and info.

In the meantime if you suddenly start to feel unwell, the best thing you can do is get to A&E as the other types of diabetes mentioned can deteriorate quickly

I agree with @Thebearcamand @Ljc , it sounds more like you are Type1 . You need to contact your Dr.

Thank you all for your replies. My sister has always thought that I am type 1, but my doctor hasn't been that great and he has only just started to take notice of the symptoms I have, hence the vitamin D deficiency being found. I do not know if he has done a c-peptide and when I spoke to him last time he said he was reluctant to give me more Metformin and to see what the blood results are at the end of April. I feel this is a bit too long to wait. I will try and contact my doctor and see what he says.

Hello @Rae1709 take note of what our experienced members say, if you get no help from the Dr, go to A&E please.

Rae - just a 'word to the wise' the term 'HYPERglycaemic' means HIGH blood glucose. If BG is too LOW. HYPOglycaemic' is used.

If you had written "high blood sugars and hyper symptoms" you would have been accurate!

Your own BG readings give cause for alarm, what other tests does the Dr. want? Loss of weight, thirst, medicarition not working and high BG all point to type 1.

Please don’t wait for blood results at the end if April, it’s far too long to wait! Badger your ur Gp or speak to another Gp at the p@ctice, you need to be referred to the diabetes clinic at the hospital as they are the real experts.
GPs unless they are really with it re diabetes , don’t normally arrange blood tests to discover what type of diabetes an adult has. many just assume T2 on age , we lifestyle and the Hb1ac result.

As I sad before if you suddenly start to feel unwell you need to go to A&E

I agree with the others, rapid unexplained weight loss, raging thirst, increased urination, fatigue (the 4 Ts of diabetes - tired, toilet, thirsty, thinner)... and no response to oral meds, with significantly raised BG suggest you may not be able to just wait until April.

It is terrible timing, with the pandemic consuming so many healthcare resources, but if you feel any nausea or abdominal pain, or if you get a sweet smell like pear drops on your breath please go to A&E

Never knew what LADA meant. Thanks now I know.

Hi. Yes everything you say points to LADA. Do try to get the GP to do a C-Peptide test. If he/she won't, then ask for a 2nd opinion or do like I did and get the test done privately (I used Medichecks). Go to A&E if your sugars stay in the 20s and keep going up. Keep the carbs down and drink plenty of water. The GP could prescribe Gliclazide which might work for a year or so but if LADA you will one day be on insulin which I found was a great relief as it provides real control.
