Welcome to the forum, there are quite a few people who are partners, friends, relatives of people with diabetes.
You could look at the Learning Zone which is full of information about the various types of diabetes which will help you get a better understanding of the conditions. You will find everybody will manage their condition in very different way as there are many different types of insulin and medication combinations that people will use and all sorts of technology to help then with monitoring their blood glucose levels and avoiding low blood sugar (hypos).
Please do come back and ask any questions but don't forget people with diabetes will often be quite private about it and don't necessarily want people to 'interfere' so tread carefully but well done for wanting to get a better understanding of your friend's condition.

Welcome to the forum A @alsps

JDRF has a ‘university toolkit‘ designed for young people with T1, which has lots of helpful information, where you could pick up some handy tidbits (even if uni isn’t part of your experience).

There’s also this useful ‘etiquette card’ which offers suggestions about how to have supportive conversations about diabetes with someone living with the condition:

And keep asking questions here 🙂
