Relationship to Diabetes

Hello I’ve had type2 diabetes for over 17 years I’m 41 now I still don’t understand it I’m having bleeds in my eyes now and can’t see properly having laser done it’s so horrible I hate it but it needs to be done I’m feeling very low at the moment I absolutely hate diabetes

Bleeds in your eyes sounds awfully scary.

How is your diabetes control?

Hi Colin hope yr ok It’s not very well controlled my last hba1c was 85 and that’s down from 105 it’s going in the right direction I’m on metformin 1000mg x2 and glicizide 80 mg x4 with trulicity injection x 1 a week it’s all going on here lol my mind is messed up I need to just lose some weight and get on with it if only it was that easy

So what are you doing to help with the weight loss and BG control beyond the meds?
Do you at least have your own BG monitor so you can test, test, test and see what foods you can best tolerate?

And congrats on getting the HbA1C down so much! That clear evidence that you can do this 🙂

Hi Bea1, welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on your progress so far, I know it's frustrating when first diagnosed but you're heading in the right direction.

It's completely natural to feel overwhelmed and although losing weight is definitely helpful, it's way easier said than done.

Is there anything in particular that you think is holding back the progress you want to make? Might be worth sharing a few specifics as we've got a wealth of info and support on the site and will be happy to help.

Hi and welcome from me too.

It seems that you have been diagnosed rather a long time but I wonder if perhaps you haven't had the best advice during that time, particularly with regard to dietary changes. Sadly the NHS is still a bit behind the curve with dietary advice for diabetics and particularly Type 2 diabetics. If you stick around the forum here and read a few posts you will find that many people have truly remarkable results from reducing their carbohydrate intake. It helps them to lose weight and dramatically improves their Blood Glucose levels and therefore their HbA1c. Relying on medication is absolutely not the answer and many people have even come off all medication once they found the right level of carbohydrates that their body could manage. If you want to know more about reducing your carbohydrate intake just ask. It all seems very complicated at first, but once you get into the swing of it, it can actually be an enjoyable way to eat, but it does take some initial effort.

I am really sorry to read that you are having problems with your eyes and need treatment. Getting better control of your Blood Glucose levels will help to reduce the risk of any further damage, so that is another incentive to take stock of what you eat and make some changes. Please ask if you want suggestion for low carb breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Some of the responses might surprise you! It is certainly not all sack cloth and ashes like some weight loss diets.

I would like to add that by adopting this way of eating I feel fitter and healthier and happier and slimmer and younger than I have for a lot of years. I feel that my diabetes diagnosis has actually given me the impetus I needed to change and therefore there has been a big benefit to it, but the key thing for me was changing my diet to low carb, higher fat and that has been a revelation!
