Hi and welcome.

There are a few of us "late starters" with Type 1 here on the forum, so you are in good company.

How did your diagnosis come about? Hope it wasn't too traumatic (ie hospital admission/DKA) but it is overwhelming however we come to find out.

How are you managing now? Have you had good support from the diabetes clinic and nurses/consultant?

Which insulin(s) are you on?

Are you finger pricking or have they given you Freestyle Libre sensors?

Sorry for so many questions but just trying to assess where you are with it.

If you have any problems or questions, just ask as we know how much there is to learn in the first few months and it is easy for a lot of it to go in one ear and out the other until you get to grips with it a bit. The forum is great for going over stuff that the nurses probably mentioned but you struggled to take in, as well as learning tips and suggestions from people who have been in your situation and figured out what worked for them. We are however all individual so what works for one may not work for another, but at least we can make suggestions as to what you can try to see if it helps.
It is also a great place to get support and let off steam because the mental and emotional strain of diabetes is not to be underestimated. Feel free to have a good rant or moan as it is better done here with people who understand the frustration than nearest and dearest. I know mine gets a bit bored of it and the eyes glaze over!
Anyway, I hope you find the forum as beneficial as I have over the past 2.5 years since diagnosis. Please shout up if you need any help.

Welcome from another late starter @Jill02
Glad that you have found the forum.

If you are happy to do so it will help us tailor our answers if you tell us what insulins you are using and any other things that you have to help you manage your T1 such as a Libre sensor.

Do have a read around the forum. It takes time to get things settled and we Are all kept on our toes with the changes needed due to weather, illness, carbs we eat, …. Fire away with any questions that arise, and know that nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I was first diagnosed with T 2 last November but was then told it was incorrect in May and that i was Type 1. This meant i had to stop the tablets and was put on Insulin (Nova Rapid) three times daily although i was already on Lantis once a day. I am still getting used to this and have had a number of ups and downs but am now experimenting with having more insulin (with advice from nurses and also my husband working out ratios etc. ) I know it is early days so am trying to be patient though it does get frustrating at times!
I'm on 16 units of Lantis in the morning and 8 units of Nova Rapid before meals. Haven't got the Libre yet but may get a chance of a trial at next appointment so very sore fingers till then!!

Hi Jill02, welcome to the forum.

Glad you found us as it can be quite daunting when you're diagnosed later on in life. Just popping in to say hi as I can see you've had some great advice/ support above.

We've got a wealth of info on the forum so do take a look around. Our main site has some useful nuggets so feel free to have a visit https://www.diabetes.org.uk/type-1-diabetes.

You're also welcome to give our helpline a call on 0345 123 2399 or post any questions you may have on the forum and we'll be happy to help.

Welcome to the forum.

If you want to trial Libre, you do not have to wait for your next appointment. You can apply for a trial Libre on their website.

However, there are techniques for minimising sore fingers when finger pricking. Have you adjusted the depth of your lancet device? And do you prick on the side of your finger?
I find it easier to extract blood with minimum depth when my fingers are warm so usually hold a hot cuppa before pricking.

Some lancet devices are more gentle than others. I use the accu-check fastclix device which I bought from Boots. I had to request my prescription to be changed to the fastclix lancets.
