Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I have type one diabetes, but for 19 years my doctors at the diabetic clinic thought I had type 2 because I was 38 when I was diagnosed. Because of this I was taking insulin and metformin. After 19 years my diabetic doctor said “ I wonder if you’re type1 or 2”. So I was weaned off metformin over 3 weeks and as it didn’t make any difference to my blood readings I was correctly diagnosed as type 1. I had been suffering badly with IBS until I came off the metformin, what a difference. I went down a dress size around my waist.

Welcome to the forum @Peerielady

Glad to hear you were able to get a tick in the right box eventually!

We have quite a few on the forum who have been reclassified in one way or another, but getting an accurate type assigned is so important to access the right support and technology.

Glad your IBS cleared up 🙂

So glad that you now have the correct diagnosis @Peerielady

There are such varied experiences for those diagnosed later in life.
With the slower onset it is so often misdiagnosed as T2.

Now that you know what you are dealing with fire away with any questions that you have u have.

Hi and welcome.

So very sorry that you had to put up with the digestive upset of Metformin for so many years unnecessarily due to an assumption of your diagnosis based on your age and to be stuck with that misdiagnosis for such a huge length of time.

I hope you are on an appropriate basal/bolus insulin regime now if not before. Which insulins do you use and how well do you manage with it/them? Are your HbA1c results OK with not too many hypos?
I imagine a change of insulin regime now might make things more confusing for you after so long but if you are currently on a mixed insulin, you should know that there are other options which would allow you more flexibility with your food and enable you to match your insulin to what you want to eat and when or even skip meals if you don't feel like eating. This is called a basal/bolus system. If you want to know more about that then just ask .... or anything else for that matter. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience to tap into here on the forum and friendly support from people who live with and face the same challenges day in day out and understand the frustrations, so make yourself at home.
