Hi everyone im Hayley and my daughter who is 14 has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes .what a shock.

Hello @Hayley130 ,

Thank you so much for joining and I am so sorry to hear about your daughters diagnosis. I can only imagine how difficult that must be for a parent. How are you coping with everything?

Ok i think had a few tears at the beginning but getting there i think. I really hate carb counting.

It can be quite difficult and a quite overwhelming. I thought this may be helpful, but we have a page dedicated to parents on the forum which can be found HERE. I also thought this link below for parents with new type 1 children could be beneficial for you as well.

Hi Hayley

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear of you ur daughter’s diagnosis. It is a shock at whatever age this happens (I was 53 at diagnosis). How is she managing with her testing and injections?

Carbs counting will eventually be simply part of your new ‘normal’ life. Whilst you hate it, how are you both doing with this? I feel that I am now an expert on most biscuits!! Meals out are a bit more difficult, but we have come to understand the different ways in which the info is given on the packets. For our more common meals and the veg we usually have we have worked out what weight we need to get 10g of carbs and then just scale it up or down to suit what we are aiming for.

You both might find the book Type1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas useful. It is extremely clearly set out and well explained. It is regularly updated so worth seeking out the most recent edition.

Keep in touch and fire away with any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here. just ask.
