Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Just saying hello as I will probably be using the forum a lot in the next 3 months.. or more!

I’ve been Type 1 for 25 years and lost my way a bit after having my son nearly 6 years ago. Trying hard but too much going on and now this!

Our whole family is self isolating because of me and really hoping my son hasn’t brought anything back home from school.

It’s a very anxiety-inducing time as I’m a very anxious individual already. On the positive, working from and staying at home has had a significant improvement on my blood sugars...

Nice to meet everyone here!

Welcome to the forum.
Have you decided to self isolate just as a precaution.
There is no requirement for this for those of us with Diabetes. I know the messages have been very confusing.

This is the updated advice from DUK, with links to the government advice.

The forumis a great place to keep in touch, and it will be good to have your depth of experience here.
Keep in touch.

Hi there,

Yes, it was our decision as I haven’t got good diabetic control at all as it is and also as originally we thought we had to self-isolate (before the shielded list was published). I’d rather not take any risks at all. To be fair most people are staying home at the moment, so that’s not too different to self-isolation.

best,
Clever cloggs

Thank you for your nice message, SB2015!

Welcome to the forum @Clever_cloggs

Glad you’ve joined us 🙂

Im just a few years ahead of you in the pancreas impersonation game, how are you currently managing your diabetes? Do you use pens or a pump? Which flavours of insulin do you prefer? And do you use and other snazzy gadgets like smart meters or sensors?

Feel free to ask any questions you may have - or just enjoy the opportunity to rant and moan about the fickle frustrations of the Diabetes Fairy’s tricks 🙂

Aww thank you for the warm welcome!

I never joined the pump club, although have been tempted to in the past but it never happened. In the end, I concluded that I was quite happy with my insulin pens. I’m on Lantus and Humalog and do carb counting as best as I can (DAFNE stylee). As things haven’t been great for a number of years, in fact HbA1c just keeps going up, I am now using FreeStyle Libre as of last winter. I also purchased the MiaoMiao at the same time last winter but have stopped using it as it was stressing me out too much. I hope to go back to using it when mr results improve. So, I have progressively gone worse at the ‘pancreas impersonation game’ (love it! ) but trying to claw my way back into the good HbA1c books...My problem is that I’m always overanalysing things and the end result is that I tend to take less insulin than I should be. This, plus, having a very active child is keeping me well busy. And now, the fear of the coronavirus is keeping me worried all the time! Lots of fun and games! At least, I now have the luxury of time, sort of, so I thought joining the forum would be a good source of reassurance and help!
Lovely to see how positive and friendly everyone is over here! Thank you and hoping to stay positive during these weird times!

Have you tried the time in range thing? That is, set (on your phone app or the FreeStyle Libre Reader) the range to 3.9-10.0 (which is as big as it'll let you), and try to stay within that range as much as possible. (More specifically, the recommendation is to try and stay >70% in range, <5% below, <5% above 13.3, and <25% above 10.0. The phone app shows 10.0-13.3 and above 13.3 separately whereas the Reader doesn't.)

Hi Bruce, thank you for the suggestion. My FreeStyle Libre app already has this and it simply shows how high and out of target I am all the time. ☹️
