Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone
New to the forum but not type 2 diabetes. I am still struggling to control my blood sugars despite being on medication and changing to a low carb and low sugar diet.

Hi sorry to hear you are struggling, I’m a relative newbie but sure others can help. Have you talked to your GP to try and see what may be going on?
Debbie

Hi and welcome.
How long have you been diabetic and have you ever successfully managed your levels during that time? What problems are you currently experiencing? Do you know your most recent HbA1c?
It would help to know which medication you are on and if you need to lose weight.... roughly how much? These things can impact our suggestions on how to tackle it.
It might also help to know what your average daily food intake looks like..... ie and example of what you have for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Many people have different ideas of what low carb is and each diabetic has a different tolerance for carbohydrates or different forms of carbohydrates, so one person might get away with eating a few potatoes but pasta sends their Blood Glucose soaring, whilst someone else might be OK with a little pasta, especially if it has been cooked, cooled and reheated, but can't get away with potatoes.
If you don't have a Blood Glucose Meter so that you can test your levels before and after food, it is well worth self funding if you can afford it. They are relatively inexpensive to buy @ approx. £15 but the on going cost of purchasing test strips for it can run up the finances, so choosing a meter which has the cheapest test strips makes financial sense and for that reason the SD Codefree which may have now been replaced with a new model called something Ninja (hopefully someone will post a link) of the Spirit Health TEE2 are recommended as a pot of 50 costs just £8.
This forum is a great place to learn and gain support as it's members have been through (or are going through) the challenges and frustrations of managing diabetes and many are really experienced and knowledgeable. I hope you find it as beneficial as I have over the past 10 months.

Hi and welcome, Im very new here myself and feel like ive suddenly fallen into a whirl wind of rising issues. Just in the last 9 months am swinging between pre-diabetes and full diabetes, blood pressure is up (currently undergoing monitoring for that) and my Cholesterol has been on quiet the rise too! I have to lose just over a stone in weight and for the first time in my life have to really think about what i eat and consciously take on some extra form of exercise! Like the gardening, walking, climbing up on roofs clearing out gutters, painting/decorating and all the other household chores i do hasnt been enough to keep me free of these issues! Having said all that, im very encouraged by the helpful kind and very knowledgeable people ive found on here, and im sure you too will gain much insight using this community in the coming days/weeks and hopefully months. I have been amazed that all the great tips and info given, and am astounded at their in depth knowledge and good advice and above all, interest and willingness in helping support others, you are not alone. Many hands here to help you. Good luck on this journey, we are walking with you 🙂

The new one is called the SD Gluco Navii, which has test strips at £8 for 50

Welcome to the forum @JMK

As others have said, it would be interesting to hear a little more about your history with diabetes. How long ago were you diagnosed, and how did it come about? Do you have any diabetes in your family or did it come out of the blue? What medications are you on and how quickly has this progressed? Do you know your most recent HbA1c?

A low carb diet may be very helpful - are you checking your BG around foods to see how your body is responding?

Sorry for all the questions!

Hi and welcome, I found it really helped me to track my bg readings in a food diary, made it so much easier to see where I needed to tweak or change things
