Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone

Suppose I should start by introducing myself. I was diagnosed as type 2 about 2 years ago and been on a bit of a roller coaster ever since. I was initially diet controlled and although I did great for a while with some positive results i really struggled to keep it up so am now on metformin but doing well again and my last results showed a significant improvement.

I am still getting used to balancing food, meal times, activity levels, sleep, fluids, stress, etc. I think working shifts isn't helping much in that department and neither is the fact that I have a food phobia. Still some fine tuning to do but I'm getting there I think.

The thing I have found most difficult is the physiological aspect of it all such as coming to terms with it all, not feeling guilty or beating myself up for doing this to myself and most importantly keeping motivated to keep doing all the things I need to do keep doing every single day.

I am currently doing the one million step challenge for diabetes uk which is going very well for me. It has really helped my motivation and increased my activity levels. It's the best thing I've done to help myself and it makes me feel really good to be raising some funds too.

So anyway that's me, looking forward to chatting with you all soon.

I'm afraid mine is very much self inflicted through lifestyle choices and being overweight. Having seen my parents and grandparents suffer ill health through not managing their diabetes I have often asked myself why I didn't do something about it when I was told I was pre diabetic but I am where I am and it could be much worse. It has been really tough to come to terms with but I have definately turned a corner with my attitude and motivation and feel much better for it. I am thrilled that the benefits were showing at my last visit to the nurse I had lost 7kg, my bmi was down from 35 to 34, my blood pressure was down a bit although it was ok anyway, my cholesterol was down quite a bit and my hba1c had gone down from 59 to 42 so I am very pleased and definately feel back on track. Just need to keep it up now which is the bit that let me down before but I feel mentally stronger this time so I'm feeling confident.

Hi Steve and very well done for your challenge, that’s quite something and pleased to hear it is having a positive effect. There are certainly a good number of us who struggle in many and different ways as regards our diabetes. I, similar to you, have a problem with lots of foods, it’s not exactly an eating disorder but I cannot eat veg, apart from peas and carrots, don’t like anything spicy or strong flavours, and when I say I can’t eat them, I mean that literally. My complete diet was carb based so I shouldn’t really be surprised I’ve got diabetes though I really was shocked. Anyway less about me - I think it must be more difficult if you work shifts as that messes with your body’s time clock etc.
Thankfully this forum is a real lifeline, everyone is friendly and supportive and no one minds if you just need to let off steam.
Keep posting x
