Hi, I'm 26 and I've been Type 1 for 17yrs now. I struggle with hypo unawareness. Have recently done the DAFNE course, and started Carb counting. I've had less hypo's since but sometimes still struggle. I'm going to the Harry Potter studios next week and I'm scared about getting my carbs wrong as I doubt I'll have nutrition labels to go by.

Any tips on how to manage and guesstimate my carbs and insulin?

Don't touch the butter beer!

On a serious note have you got a copy of carbs and cals or the carbs and cals app on your phone. Either would help you get somewhere near the correct values.

I do have the app, I find it a bit difficult sometimes as it doesn't seem to have a large variety.
And the butter beer is one of the things I was thinking of!! Shame I'll have to avoid it but surely I could have a sip of my friends, just to say I tasted it?

Well - you have been told - I expect? - how to regain your awareness? That is to run your BG a bit higher than you were, for a couple of months. It certainly works.

Then you very gradually reduce it again to where you want it and the hypo symptoms should continue.

Nothing else works so resign yourself to doing it, cos you will benefit.
 
I fear complications from highs more than I do passing out from lows. So I'm never going to run my bloods too high. I freak out when they are around 12. Can just cope if they are 8-9. But I still tend to eat less even then.
 
Now that you are carb counting Scarlet, are you finding that things are more level?

It may be worth talking to a specialist nurse about your hypo awareness. I have no idea how high you would need to run to regain the awareness, but perhaps it would be worth the conversation.

When I am away I also use Carbs and Cals. It is not perfect but I just look for the best matchand go from there. Sometimes it is better than just a guess with nothing to refer to.

When I have gone to something very special, like your visit to the studio,I would probably give my self some leeway and do the insulin as best I can and then correct later, but I don’t think I would miss out on any unique experiences, however I do understand the focus on keeping levels on target to avoid long term conditions.
 
I read that running high isn’t always the best way to regain awareness although it’s a likely side effect of running hypo free for a number of days.
 
I said 'a bit higher' which as far as I'm concerned, does not mean 'high'. People do all sorts of things - like trying to maintain and correct down to 5.0 which is far too low for comfort. What I mean is, say you normally aim for '6-ish' instead, aim for '6.5-ish'. It will mean that your A1c goes up a couple so instead of eg 49 you could be eg 52 - but that's not going to harm you.
 
Thanks for the advice guys. I have had a few good days with level bloods. And I haven't passed out since the course but I've also struggled with some extreme highs (mid 20's etc).
I was told by the team to try and get my bloods on the top side of the DAFNE targets, so 7-8. Which I'm not hitting as often as I'd like.
