Relationship to Diabetes
hi
im a respite foster carer and i am about to complete diabetes training for looking after a youngster with type 1 diabetes.

by using this forum i hope to gain a bit of everyday knowledge of how people cope with their condition

Hiya Steve

Foster care is a challenge for starters without any further added complications apart from the usual ones. How old is the young in?

It could be a challenge but it might not be depending on how 'up' for challenges both of you are. If it involves a change of school, then you need to ensure the school - well, or the existing one come to that - have everything necessary in place so for that there's info and advice available on the Diabetes UK website - and it needs to be done with the child's medical team - ie his/her hospital team because he/she should be under the care of not only a hospital diabetes clinic, but preferable a specialist paediatric one - childrens needs are different of course because of growth hormones, apart from normal things like puberty ones!

Highly recommend a book written for parents - and children - though equally useful to people diagnosed in adulthood - Type 1 diabetes in babies, children and adolescents - by Ragnar Hanas.

Very best of luck to you both!

No such thing as a daft question on this forum - or in a diabetes clinic!! - so ask away whenever you need to!

Hi Steve and welcome
I genuinely admire what you have decided to do and foster a youngster and any support you need PLEASE just ask and I know someone will try to help.
There is a wealth of knowledge and experience on here so use it and as @trophywench quite rightly states there is no such thing as a daft question.
Look forward to your updates and good luck
