I have joined because my elderly father has recently been diagnosed with type 1. There are so many question so thought this would be a good place to start.

How did your father come to be diagnosed.
Welcome to the forum Buddy 41. Do you have type 1 diabetes yourself? If not, you might want to change your status to "Carer / other".
I am slightly surprised about the diagnosis of your "elderly father". It's unusual, although not impossible, for an elderly person to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (always needs insulin, in addition to managing diet and exercise) - type 2 (treated initially with diet & exercise, plus medications, usually tablets at first, with injectables / insulin later, if needed) is more usual in later life.
