Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello there,
i thought i knew tons about diabetes. My husband has had type two diabetes for about six years which began with metformin and after a fairly massive heart attack four years ago changed to insulin injections. He is still struggling to get his BS down to a managable level, but despite several different dietitions we are still at a loss as far as fruit is concerned. The original dietition said only small amounts of fruit no juice and no grapes, watermelons etc.the latest one said all fruit is good as long as he doesnt sit and eat a whole punnet of grapes in one sitting he should be fine. He continues to have BS of at least ten which I have always put down to to much fat in his diet - the latest dietition changed his meds putting him on an extra morning one and taking away the night time one as he tends to be asleep by ten (which was the time he had to take it. I have alway as been as supportive as i can and have tried to find out everything i can about diet. my own BS has always been 5 irrespective of what I eat, that is until now! I went to see my dr two weeks ago - I have lupus which has affected my energy levels, my muscles and joints, I now have fits, and my face looks like a green house fell on me because the daylight does not like me - another sympton of lupus they tell me...
the doc decided to do more blood and urine tests, phoned me after about 5 days and said well dizz you have a "wee infection" a kidney infection so i will get some antibiotics to you oh and by the way you are diabetic and i need to see you tomorow. Well to be honest i didnt believe him - 4 years of lupus has not exactly enhanced my confidence inthe medical profession so the first thing i did was a blood test and would you believe it? 17.8!!!!!!!! i was totally gobsmacked and duely went along to see the doc the next day. he has put me on metformin morning and night has arranged for me to see the pediatrist tomorrow and have a diabetic check in a month, oh and i will hear from the dietition and the eye people. i have no idea what type it is but am assuming as i am 45, over weight and have a disability that makes excersise hard that it is type two.
So. here i am armed with looking after john for six years (he also has chest problems and joint problems as well as a severe heart condition.) i think i know what i need to do, i dont like fat i dont fry anything for myself, i was addicted to chocolate and ice cream which i have cut out. my diet these days seems to consist of white meat or fish, veg and fruit with a bit of pasta rice and jacket potatoes thrown in. i did read some stuff about glycemic index but got confused when it said that salted peanuts were ok when i thought they were on the very bad list! i have started eating three meals a day, at regular time etc etc etc but despite all that I am still getting a BSof around around 16it has even been as high at 30 i phoned the dr but they said they are having new computers so i cant see anyone till after the 23rd but thats almost a month away. I am feeling very down and horrendously tired. i had just come to terms with the lupus and cannot believe this now. i am sorry to sound off on my first post and i trully hope it will get easier as time goes by but for now the pair of us are like the blind leading the blind
i hope i will get to know lots of people on here as its amazing how isolated i am feeling right now
hugs

Hi UD,

So its back to basics then.
the foods you are in a titanic struggle with are starchy carbohydrates ( potatoes, cereal, flour, bread, rice, pasta - and probably fruit ). A Fact of Life they might not have made clear to you in the last 6 years.

read and print out these three links below ... and read them again... and put them into practice ...

In general you should be aiming for a Low GI, Mediterranean Diet ( lots of salads, fish and good oils )
p.s. fruit is a problem for most T2s - it contains a fast acting carbohydrate called Fructose.

Hi Dizz, welcome to the forum.

thank you

Hi everyone
thank you so much for your advice and kind words, i hope steph is right and i will soon feel at home as its something i find hard to find, i guess all my little insecurities have come to the for front over the last couple of years, sometimes i feel lke i have stopped being a person and started being a list of medical conditions lol.

still today as they say is the first day of the rest of my life, i am due to have a diabetic check this week but my gp surgery has closed down except for emergencies until the 23rd so they had to cancel it, so i have till then to try and get my blood sugar down below 18.8 which seems to be the average. i am currently having a low sugar cereal for breakfast, a salad and cold meat sandwich and a low fat yogurt, dinner is normally white meat of fish and lots of veg or salad. i have lost 6 lb in the last three weeks since i have given up sugar, chocolate, icecream, cake, etc etc etc so i must be going in the right direction right? lol
anyway again thanks so much everyone
hugs
dizz
