Hello my name is Chaz and i got diagnosed type 2 at the end of 2016. i thought i had it when i went to the dr's, so no great shock when my test results came back positive. im just getting on with it really, it is what it is, so just trying to make all the the lifestyle adjustments i can. i got a codefree meter from amazon and i am in the process of experimenting with food to see what effect things have on me.
the biggest change for me is that i have went from not thinking about food at all really ( get home and see what there is in the fridge, and make something ) to boring the life out myself with my forward planning. also looking at food labels in the supermarket really has screwed up my speed shopping.
cheers

Hi, @CHAZ. I did the same thing, scrutinising every damn label (and I still do it...)! You've got off to a good start by getting a meter and testing the effects of different foods - it's the only way to keep track, and actually I found it quite fascinating to compare different foods and different results. I also started exercising again and lost some weight, which helps a lot (if you need to). Did the doc prescribe you any medication?

You sound very level headed about things, so welcome to the forum, get to know the different threads, and ask anything you like - no question is daft 🙂

Hi
yeah it really is an eye opener actually paying attention to what you eat, although some of the info is quite depressing, why do some really nice things need to be so bad :(
my exercise level is already not to bad, i have working dogs so they keep me busy. i have recently started running, so i will see how that goes.
the doctor has me on 2 x metformin , twice a day.
the meter is a handy gadget, the joy when something i actually like to eat does not effect my numbers is priceless lol

Hello and welcome Chaz. I can't imagine not ever thinking about food. That must have been great. I'm a food addict so I live to eat rather than eat to live. Sometimes it's draining. It takes up a lot of time. Having D has taken some of the stress off as I now try to eat just twice a day, low carb. 🙂 Good luck with everything.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. I find that it is good to find some really nice things that are not so bad. How about some 80 - 90 percent chocolate, or a fresh cream chocolate eclair? I found a chocolate mousse the other day that was only 11g of carbs and felt like a big treat.
Oops, should probably be telling you all about a wonderful salad I made.... Welcome to the forum

to be honest i have managed to drop chocolate and crisps and fizzy juice out my diet easier than i thought. it is a chinese on a friday or saturday night, or popping into McDs on my way home from work so i dont need to cook when i get in, that gets to me a wee bit.

Hi CHAZ & a warm welcome to the forum. It looks like you've got off to a good start just by thinking positively & also joining us like diabetics here. We are a friendly lot & support each other, so well done.

Shopping is a nightmare for me too 😱 I find something I like, check the label, check how many grams of carbs sugars & fat are in it....only to find if it's low in sugars - it's high in fat etc. Can't win! It's far better to cook your own meals CHAZ if you can, then you know exactly what you're eating.

I usually have a mammoth cooking session once a week when I make a variety of meals for the week which I then freeze. Then it's just a case of taking a meal out of the freezer the night before, for the next days meal. All that's left to do then is to prepare fresh veggies of my choice (usually 3 & almost always broccoli) Its best eating only new potatoes coz of the low carbs content.Try not to make it a chore, enjoy what you're preparing & eating.....There are a multitude of healthy recipes & tasty menu's on here too should u be at a loss.

Diabetes is not all plain sailing at the best of times (Sorry!) & can test us to our very limits when we least expect it! 😱. If that happens to you, plz do post your concerns in a thread in the general messageboard & one of us will pop along to answer your questions. On good days (edited) the big 'D' behaves itself :D giving us a little respite from its bullying! :D

Good for you for getting a meter to test your blood glucose levels (bgls) Usually we test before a meal....then test again 2hrs afterwards to see what effect the food we've eaten has on our bgls. We also test upon waking in the morning as well.
Good luck & take care

Hi
thanks for the reply :D i really will need to do the freezing meals thing, im sure that would help me out alot. obviously the food side of things is very important, and to be honest im still don't know what im doing, but i have my first blood test (since being put on meds) on wednesday so the results from that will let me know if im on the right track.

If you shop in the likes of Asda, Tesco etc I find it easier searching the products on their website as it gives you the nutrition information on there too, I then write a list so I can just go in and grab things, just a thought 🙂 x

@Kaylz. Good thinking Batman! I'm thinking I should do that too. x

@CHAZ. Hi. How are you getting on and how did your blood test go today - when do you get the results?

Shopping was a nightmare for me at first Kaylz, you know, reading labels etc. but now that I know what I can and can't eat, or shouldn't, it's easier - thus spending less time in the supermarket & other shops. I'd get home & my daughter would ask me "Where you've been, worried about you" So how much time do you spend on line and how much time have you saved when shopping? x

Welcome, yes I find reading all the labels a chore, but know I have to do it.
