Just been advised today that I have type 2 Diabetes.
Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( How did it come about?

Firstly - don't panic! It's a serious condition, but thankfully something that can be managed very well with the right knowledge and a bit of determination, and you've made an excellent start by joining up here 🙂 There are loads of friendly, knowledgeable people here who can help you with any questions or concerns you may have, so whatever it is, please ask - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Can I suggest having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter for starters - they should help to set the scene and give you an understanding of what it is all about and how to tackle it. I'd also highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which is a very helpful, positive guide to these early weeks and months 🙂

Were you given and advice, medication or information from your doctor?

Let us know if we can help in any way 🙂

Thank you, yes I saw the doctor and he was really helpful, he gave me some printed info sheets and I have now got to see the diabetic nurse. I know it is my own fault as I do not eat at regular times and do not have the best diet, but hey I have got to sort myself out now but at least I know now and hopefully can turn it around. With regard to medication had stated that they prefer to start you straight away.

I've been told to cut the carbs & sugars which was stuff i liked like spuds rice & pasta & fizzy drinks, eat more greens & protein so i'm trying to adjust my diet accordingly. I think there are plenty of choices & alternatives its just a matter of adjusting.

Thank you, I am not sure which is going to be worse the food or the drinking as I only drink water or caffeine free Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi..

Hi and welcome from a fellow T2.

I'm almost 3 weeks in and getting to grips with my low carb diet a bit better. I went out for breakfast this morning with my husband and we both had a full English. I gave him my hashbrown and toast but I could eat the Egg, Bacon, Sausage, Tomato, Mushrooms and beans so I didn't feel deprived. I then bought myself some 99% Lindt chocolate which has only 8g carbs per 100g bar so a couple of squares of that will go down nicely later with a cup of tea.

It's overwhelming at first but you will adjust and your blood sugar will come down.

ps if you do go low carb diet you will be pleased to hear you can still have wine!!

You say you have been given meds, what have you been given and did they give you a blood glucose monitor?

I went out for breakfast this morning
Breakfast is one of the better options for dining out...... Love the places that serve all day breakfasts.....

I have an egg, bacon and sausage for breakfast most days from staff canteen!! I don't know what else to eat for breakfast as toast or cereal is out and I hate yoghurts!

Indian restaurants are good too. Lots of protein options and sag bhaji to have my greens. Else if my food comes with potatoes I just ask for no potatoes and extra veg. I don't worry about sauces though I wouldn't go for a very sweet sauce obviously.

Thank you, I have to see the diabetic nurse for the monitor and the doctor spoke about metaformin it just seems so much to take in as I have never watched what I eat before but I suppose that will teach me..

Hi Grogg 1, very interested to see you mention sausages, i was told to avoid them due to the amount of breadcrumbs in them. I'm guessing you mean the butcher's own sausages with higher meat content?

Got to be careful with sausages, read the labels as they can vary quite a lot..... If you go to a butcher then you could ask about the content....

Hi Sarah and welcome to the fold. Y'gotta luv all day breakfasts I agree, but I don't have the hash browns or the beans and I do have the sausages but will keep on eye on them in future because they have sugar in. 100% meat sausages are more expensive but tastier and healthier. 🙂
