Hi, I was told I was diabetic 3 months ago, really struggle with what to eat.
I have high blood pressure so no salt. I have high Cholesterol so no meat, eggs or dairy. I have been told not to eat bread, pasta or rice anymore, so at the moment just eating fruit and salad bits. Don't think I can cope with just salad and fruit over the winter!

Welcome, DCRBR. Are you on any medication at all? Tell us a bit more and we'll try to answer any questions - and have a look at the Food/carb queries & recipes bit of the forum as you may find it useful 🙂

Hello, thank you for replying so quickly. Yes I am on Metformin 500mg twice a day. Statins and blood pressure lowering tablets. I have type 2.

Ah! Sounds like what I was taking... You needn't restrict yourself to just fruit & salad, in fact a lot of fruit isn't that good for us as it's still full of sugar. Many people here find that berries are good (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, etc) and can be eaten with yogurt or cream. Cutting down on white bread, pasta & rice is a good idea, and meat and eggs should be ok. I'm not much of a cook, but there are plenty of recipes here which may interest you if you like cooking or baking.

Have you got a meter & strips to test your levels with? This will tell you what foods are good for your BG levels and what aren't. It's only by testing that you can really get a handle on this. Most GPs won't give them to type 2s unfortunately, but you can get a cheap one from Home Health called the SD Codefree meter, although the price may be going up a bit from October - it's still pretty cheap compared to others. Testing before a meal and 2 hours after is very illuminating!

Have a read around some of the other sections to get your bearings, and I'm sure others will be along in due course. It takes a while to get your head round it, but many of us have found that with a bit of information, some encouragement, and some changes, we've ended up fitter and healthier than before. All the best from another type 2 🙂.

I have been told not to eat bread, pasta or rice anymore
My advice is to replace these with nice leafy vegetables..... I am so looking forward to winter when I can get fresh baby Brussel Sprouts again.
I have high Cholesterol so no meat, eggs or dairy
Dietary Cholesterol is not the cause of high cholesterol; the liver manufactures that extra cholesterol from excessive carbs.... My cholesterol has reduced to almost normal levels despite eating meat, eggs & dairy (oh & not sparing the fat) At DX they could not even measure LDL due to excessive triglycerides....

My cholesterol is also reducing nicely & l stuff my face with butter, cream & eggs. It's carbs that cause a rise in cholesterol.

Seconding what @Mark Parrott and @Martin Canty just said - my cholesterol is good now, and I'm going to talk to my GP when I next see her about reducing/stopping medication for it.
