Hi everyone,

I've been following this site for a couple of weeks and realised that I hadn't registered or said hello... so hello!
I got diagnosed finally a month ago after several missed chances by doctors, dentists and opticians.
Diagnosis actually came as a bit of a relief in the end.

So, onwards and upwards with my 'Childhood Disease' which I am learning more and more about each day of my middle age!

Hi & welcome Qwertyfan 🙂 There is lots to take in & you have joined a good group. good luck with things 🙂

Welcome to the forum, I got diagnosed at 42 and there are a number of us on here who were well into adulthood on diagnosis.
How are you getting on with your insulin regime?

I have many reminders set on my phone, and have only forgotten a couple of times.
Remembering to eat regularly, especially breakfast I thought would be difficult. I've never been a day time eater... however I seem to have developed an appetite recently, which will potentially compensate for the 5st+ that I lost this year before last month....

Hi Qwertyfan, welcome to the forum 🙂 I was diagnosed aged 49 - so much for juvenile, eh? What insulin regime are you on?

Hi Northerner,
I'm on Lantis and Novorapid. it seems to be doing ok just now, blood glucose been mostly in single figures for a couple of weeks now. And eyesight is coming back to me thankfully.
Despite the late diagnosis I feel like I've been quite lucky. Mind you, got my base line tests to go through later in the week, maybe I won't have been so lucky....

Ah that's good - same as I was put on at diagnosis. I had problems with eyesight also, apparently the high sugar levels distort the lens but things should get back to normal eventually.

There's a lot to learn - I'm still learning every day - but you can ask any questions you have here and someone will more than likely have an answer for you. I'd really recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, by far and away the best book available on Type 1 and all its ins and outs. Don't be put off by the title, it's perfectly suitable for us grown-ups as well 🙂

Hi qwertyfan
Another one here diagnosed at 40, we're a rare breed! I too had a good while of medical folk not picking it up, I think it's fairly common because the general consensus is that you get type 1 in childhood or early adulthood. I had problems with my eyes (in the year leading up to diagnosis I had three changes of lens prescription) but they have now stabilised nicely so hopefully you'll find they settle down even more. Just wanted to say hello and welcome really 🙂

Oh and my appetite in the first three months was something to behold, but that evened out too, although I remain enthusiastic about grub :D

Hiya Qwertyfan. I was dx at 41. You're definitely not alone! Hope you're getting on OK with your new situation. 5 stone! 🙂

I think we did an informal poll a while back and there were a lot more people diagnosed T1 later in life than you might expect, seems it's just as common as children getting diagnosed. The main problem is that some GPs think ONLY children can get T1 - we even had a T1 member who was told when he turned 40 he would be Type 2! 😱 So many people here have been misdiagnosed and given inappropriate treatment (some still are :()

Welcome to the forum qwertyfan 🙂

You might not think it but I would love to have be diagnosed when 40 odd. Instead been at it 48 yrs. since 3. Still full time work & never been on the dole. Good luck 🙂
