Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm new to this blog and have Type 2 diabetes. Its fairly well controlled but my kidney function is diminishing. I also had bladder cancer a few years ago and had my bladder removed so I used a urostomy bag. Just lately my urine has had a really strong smell and I wondered if this is something to do with the diabetes.

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the problems you have been experiencing. I'm not a doctor, so can't answer your question, but my experience has been that a strong smell to the urine may be caused by being dehydrated. Is it possible you haven't been drinking enough in the hot weather?

Hi Northerner. According to my wife that could well be the problem! Many thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to be good and drink more and see how I get on.

hi Dave, welcome to the forum. You have been through the mill, but isn't it wonderful we can all speak to one another, I find the support on here marvellous 🙂. I get darkish colour urine from not drinking enough water and if i have protein in my urine from cystitis etc. do take a urine sample to be sent off just to be sure.

Hello and welcome Dave.

Could any of your medication be causing your urine to smell? I know antibiotics have that effect although I don't know if other medicines have the same effect. just a thought.

Welcome to the forum Dave 🙂

Hi Dave and welcome from me 🙂

Just a thought but may be worth popping a sample in at the GP's, strong smelling urine can be a sign of a water infection/UTI - worth getting checked out, some people can be more prone with urostomy bags I'm afraid. Drinking more will help too. Urine may be more sweet smelling and concentrated if sugars are higher ( they used to smell and taste urine to dx diabetes in the ole ages - eek!!) 🙂

Welcome from me too.

I drink over 3 litres a day on medical advice, and it seems to keep me OK, except when I eat certain things like asparagus.

Hi Dave welcome to the forum. I am at stage 5 with kidney failure with a function of 14%, what stage are you at ? You shouldnt have to restrict your fluid intake because of ckd but don.t drink too much either. You will find lots of advice on here...Tintin
