Relationship to Diabetes
Hi

I'm new to this. My name is Trina.... So hi there!!!

My partner has had type 1 diabetes for nearly 20 years and we have been together for 2. I had never come across diabetes before, but needless to say learnt quite a lot already. I keep reading different literature, however I'm stuck at mo. He can be very irritable, easily frustrated and on some occasions quite mean. Then tells me it's because his sugars are high. I am learning the signs off when he is low as it can appear in a physical sense eg sweating etc, but haven't really found many details of when sugars are high. Has anyone encountered anything like this or could share their experiences???

Thanks

Katrina

Hi Katrina, welcome to the forum 🙂 The symptoms of low blood sugars are usually more obvious and universal than high blood sugar symptoms. Generally though, high blood sugars will make someone (as you describe!) irritable, moody and grumpy - probably quite tired and lethargic as well. When my levels are high I also feel quite nauseous. Symptoms of lows can be sweating, shaking, talking rubbish, blurry vision etc. It's a bit like a panic attack, plus some people can get a bit paranoid.

Feel free to ask any questions, and we'll do our best to help! 🙂

Hi Trina welcome to the forum. Hi blood sugar levels do knock one around, I can get irritable and maybe a bit snappy. Levels high or low can effect us in many ways depending on how hi or low one is.

Others will be able to give more advice on what high levels do to them. It also depends on how high is high. The higher mine go and stay high affects my vision as well.

Some of it is a learning curve in recognising changes in ones character, if you notice changes and your partner is willing test his sugar levels to see what they are like to his mood.

Hi Katrina,
Welcome to the forum 🙂
I think everyone has a unique experience with their D......if I'm high I tend to feel thirsty and obviously need to go to the toilet quite frequently. If I'm low I tend to get heart palpitations and i just feel "detached" from the world around me....its kind of difficult to explain. My husband says my eyes get a bit "glazed" as well - obviously I wasnt aware of this myself 🙂

I think everyone has different symptoms, there is no one size fits all, but think the most important thing is to have a certain amount of self awareness so you can you can spot the signs and act accordingly. I dont think my highs or lows affect my moods, at least not in any drastic way.

Hio Trina a warm welcome to the forum

Hiya, yes, I do get a bit stroppy, or perhaps I should say, stroppier than usual LOL

The important thing is, having the knowledge to correct those highs and not just leaving it! and not being funny at all here, does your man have that knowledge? I only ask because it has to be learned in order to get it just right and not over-correct and then go hypo.

This is one of the (million) things you can learn on a formal 'Carb Counting and Dose Adjustment' course and not everyone gets to go on one of these. Some areas don't offer them and some 'old hands' like me for instance, might have thought we wouldn't learn anything but would just go along anyway .... no harm in a refresher .....how wrong I was. I learned a LOT.

Hi & welcome. It will make you a bit "stroppy" 😱 (things going on in you head & not knowing what it is)
