Finally found the newbies location to say hello...

Hello!

Been Type 1 since I was 18 months old (was a bit of shocker when the doc told me...I couldn't wake for a few weeks! :D) but it has never been seen as a problem, merely something that gets sorted during preparations for things...

I've recently been on a course for Diabetics to refresh or educate in managing their Diabetes (New Deal something or other - was developed by a very enthusiastic doctor at Stirling Royal - was a superb course and highly recommended) and I'm now deciding to take a more active role in Diabetes as I discovered that out of the group of people on the course, I was the only one who didn't see it as a problem - I found that really interesting and a bit of an eye opener.

Anyway, I'm 33 now, a new parent and I use to do a serious mountain of exercise (a weekly cycle of 400 miles - for fun) plus a host of various other sports...last 5 years or so I've been involved in a trailbuilding project which has meant all spare time has been spent with hand tools at the ready to create trails - so the biking and other forms of exercise have fallen away somewhat - then with the arrival of my daughter I'm now on 1 evening a week for biking so I make sure I get out and make good use of the time.

Based in the Central Belt of Scotland and have a tendency to provide far too much info when a simple response would suffice...

Hi! :D

Hello and welcome to the forum! My son is 11 and diagnosed 9 months ago - he used to cycle for miles every weekend- but we found its more difficult trying to get his levels stable throughout - so if you have any tips that would be great! Congratulations on becoming a father too!:DBev

My son Nathan was diagnosed 2 and a half years ago at the age of 11.

I will look forward to reading your posts ... I'm am sure you have some great tips for us parents and diabetics... You were diagnosed the same age as my friend... she is 37 now... and a scot like yourself... born and raised in Perth.

Congratulations on becoming a father...:D

Hello and welcome!

As Heidi say we can become sort of an extended family. I was diagnosed when I was five years old, thirteen years ago. Congratulations on becoming a father! :D

Oh I don't know about tips...I'm not exactly a model diabetic...although since learning I was going to become a dad, I'm getting better again...before I went off the rails, I was seriously well controlled, then I developed the attitude of thinking I knew best...so things weren't really properly looked after - HBA1C never went drastically bad but certainly wasn't great.

Saying that exercise was always ok...always happy to share my 'knowledge' if it is going to help, but I always say it isn't the right thing to do as it works for me but not necessarily for another.

Thanks for the welcome...

hey you found your way dick

Hello! Always nice to meet another oldie! (I was diagnosed at 11 months, now in my 30s!) Sometimes I think in some ways we're actually luckier than the type 2's or type 1's who get it later in life & then have massive lifestyle changes to make. At least I never knew any different! 😛

Congrats on the new baby!! :D Best reason in the world to take care of yourself!

All the best,

Twitchy
