Hi Lj, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did you come to be diagnosed, did you have symptoms? Have you been put on any medication for your diabetes? It can be a bit overwhelming to begin with, but please ask any questions you may have and we will try our best to help. Diabetes, although serious, can be managed well so try to stay positive! Many people find that once they learn how to look after their blood sugars well they begin to get more energy and feel better than they have done for ages.

I would suggest having a look at our 'Useful Links' thread for some good sources of information to get you started 🙂

Welcome to the forum Lj 🙂

Hi northerner and Mark. I was having a few symptoms but didnt realise that they were symptoms of diabetes . my doctors disovered it after testing for other things as i have other health issues and they have been keeping a close eye on me this past year. I have been on the site trying to gather lots of information as my as my Aunty who is a nurse told me that information is my best weapon against the diabetes. at the moment i am feeling a little overwhelmed but i know it will take time to get the hang of things 🙂

Well, you are welcome to ask anything that might be worrying or confusing you - we are here to help! 🙂 Your Aunty has the right idea! I would really recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - it will give you a good start in understanding what it is all about 🙂

My biggest problem is i have always had a very sweet tooth and i am craving chocolate like there is no tomorrow. I am struggling a lot with that mostly

The thing to do is to go for a good quality dark chocolate -70% cocoa if that is OK for you (I find 80% too bitter). Have a couple of squares and that should satisfy your craving without too much impact on your blood sugars 🙂 You will be able to reduce your cravings in time as your tastes adapt - you could try sugar-free jellies when you get the cravings, I buy the Hartley's powders and make up 5 125ml pots from each sachet. Or go for nuts instead as they will have little effect on your levels and should also suppress your desire for sweet things 🙂

Thank you will try those things thank you for your advice i have been sneaking wee chocolates here and there and just feel sillly about it :( its especially hard since its christmas time aswell lots of temptation around.

Ain't that the truth! If you can, match up your sneaky chocolates with some exercise - works wonders for your blood sugar levels! 🙂 Also, eating your chocolates with a main meal will help lessen their impact, but do remember - in moderation! 🙂

I am hoping to join a gym soon so i can get the exercise i so desperately need still have more blood tests to be done and wont be discussing treatment with my doctor till after that so feel a little bit like im in limbo just now. my main focus just now has been cutting out the sweets and fatty foods and gathering as much information as i possibly can. thank you very much for your help and advice has made me feel a little less lost 🙂

If you are actually craving sweet stuff, it's usually a sign your blood sugar is running too high - ie the glucose is building up in your blood because the body can't access it and use it like it normally should.

Hence the brain sends you messages to eat summat sweet, which you do and then doing that just makes it worse .......

I am trying not to give into the cravings as much as possible and unfortunately I have no way of knowing how high my blood sugar levels are just now but hopefully after the new year I will know more about how to find out what it is and be better equiped to control it 🙂
