Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all
My names Ross and im 23. I have had diabetes since i was 18, never really took it serious at first to be honest. I weighted 24 stone and i am now just over 15 stone. I wish i could say i managed to do it the proper way, but i went through a patch of depression and i refused to take my medication, as i found if i did not take it i would loose weight. Very stupid and idiotic thing to do, but whats done is done. Last January my mother who has diabetes stood on a nail and had her leg amputated. This gave me a shock to the system and i went to my local hospital and was advised i was now type one diabetic. I began taking my medication again, and i slowly started to put weight back on. Now at this moment in time i an not taking my medication every day, and i dont want to go back down this road, but i just feel i am at a loss, as i am terrible with my diet, but i want to try and become healthy and have better control of my diabetes.

I take metaformin tablets, lantus injection in morning at 40 units, and i have nova rapid i am supposed to take after each meal, at 4 units, the diabetic nurse says i will eventually gain a ratio or cards to units for my novo rapid injection but i have not been to see the nurse in regards to diet as i am not keeping good control of my sugars.

I just joined this site to talk to people who may be in the same situation as myself or who has overcome the same situation or just anyone who can give me any advice on diet and just geting through the day to day running of being a diabetic.

hi RMC- Well youve joined a great forum and half the battle surely is realising that you need to do something about it- have you asked to go on a DAFNE course ?

Welcome to the forum rossmillercontact 🙂

Im not sure if its the docs or DSN's that refer you - try both - DAFNE -dose adjustment for normal eating - 5 day course provides skills to enable individuals to match insulin to carb intake on a meal by meal basis- folk on here seem to have found it helpful-

Hi thanks it looks like a really good site, i dont know what that course is. Where can i find information on it.

Hi there. As has been said, you have taken the first step and as we all know with this, one step at a time is what we all do.

If you are looking for information on DAFNE courses, there are a number of threads on here somewhere which will give you some information. Also if you try BDEC on the internet, you'll get an idea what it's about.

I stay in Falkirk too and I went on the "New Deal" Course (which seems to be the local version of DAFNE - certainly it seems to do the same things) and I got access through the DSN at the hospital. It really is excellent - in simple terms, you eat as much or as little as you want, calculate the carbohydrate in it and use the information to decide how much insulin you need for each meal you eat.
