Hello everybody

Im Ben, Im a 28 (29 on Friday) year old diabetic, I was diagnosed aged 8 and this year has marked 20 years as a diabetic.

Im a recovering "Ignorer of my diabetes" where I have spent many years doing the bare minimum to get by.

I have managed to get my HBA1C from 8.3 taken in April / June to 6.4% this month. I aim to improve on this by looking at lower carb alternatives and improving further.

Ive recently had a couple of scares which I am treating as markers to get everything under control. And I have joined a few forums which Id like to get activly involved in.

On a personal note, I am a keen Wovles fan, and I work in the nuclear industry as a manufacturing engineer / estimator.

Im here to engage with other diabetics, share ideas, diet and other, and see if maybe i can offer some advice back to other when im fully on track!

Pleased to meet you all

Ben

Hi Ben and a warm welcome to the forum, nice to have you on the boards, what insulin regime are you on and do you have a good care team around you

Welcome bennyg70.

You must be an optimist, being a Wolves fan!

As well as food / diet, testing and medication, exercise is important, too, in managing diabetes - in case you haven't already found it, http://www.runsweet.com/ has lots of good background information about physiology, as well as specific advice / experiences of many sports / activities, not just running.

Hey , I was after sympathy for being a diabetic... Not for being a Wolves fan!!

Good to be on board!

One of my main attractions to this board was Bevs food thread where everybody tried different meals and posted their results. Its one of the most interesting and insightful threads ive seen across the numerous boards!

Im on Lantus and apidra. I take 14 units at night, and work on a 10 / 1 ratio carb counting.

Im going to reduce my lantus from tonight as Im having a few too many lows in the night and morning.

My health team is relativly new as ive moved so much recently. My DSN is nice, although maybe a little stuck in her ways, my gp is pretty useless. However when ive needed to go specilists at the hospitals, (Im under a hyper tension clinic and for eyes, they are fantastic)

I do exercise, mainly walking, and in the summer - tennis. I may try and get into badminton soon.

I eat around 150 carbs a day, and have found that reducing them from about 250 :/ ive gained much better control and stopped such high spikes, although i probably do still spike a little higher than id like too. So maybe ill try and cut a few more out.

So how about you guys?

Welcome to the forum Ben 🙂

If I'm a fan of any footer team, it would have to be the Baggies I spect, due to where I happened to be born and lived during my formative years.

Considering I'm so old they used to base your insulin treatment on what you already ate, providing that was balanced and all that jazz, mine was 110g a day and that's what I usually eat to this day. But I don't limit, cos it's normal for me LOL

I'm a 56kg, 5ft 4ins female wimp.

O my! I dont think we can be associated.. west brom!?

Only kidding 😉

Id like to knock a few more out - maybe get down to 120

So im aiming to go 20g morning, 40g lunch and 40g dinner, but its so hard!

Im scared of cheese, thats my issue!!

Welcome to the forum Ben- my lot are true bham city fans -think they are playing wolves soon- glad your getting to grips with things now -welcome again

Well this house is divided half arsenal and well then theres me newcastle utd ha.

We cant all have good taste though just look at my OH 😛

Since you asked - sportswise, I run / cycle / orienteer / marshal and compete at adventure races / mountain marathons etc. Was a Games Maker Medical Dispatcher in Olympic Park control room at Olympics and Paralympics, then marshal at Dragon's Back Race in Wales.

No interest at all in football, watching, nor playing, due to lack of physical co-ordination when a ball is involved.

Like eating most things, including cheese, but try not to overdo things 🙂

Welcome to the forum Ben, it's a great place to learn, share and moan about the Big D!

Don't like football, but do love cheese 🙂

Thanks for the welcome guys and for the bday message!

Looking forward to chatting to you all, I hope I have as much to share from my experiences as I have to learn!

Cheers all

Hello Ben and welcome to the forum. Not heard of Wolves what division are they in? 😛:D
Glad to hear you are managing to sort your diabetes out as well.

Hello and welcome. Have you thought about eating food with a lower glycemic load rather than keep reducing carbs?

Whilst I realise you are also a T1 PGC, doesn't that cause you some problems when bolusing? I know it does me if they are particularly 'slow'. Partic when I was on MDI.

What does PGC mean!?

At the moment I do go for low GI carbs, Brown absolutley everything..!!

Wolves are in probably the best most competitive league in the world! Why would we want to be anywhere else? :/

Happy birthday Ben, and welcome to the forum from me 🙂 Hope you have a great day!

One thing I found that helped me reduce post meal spikes (which you may already do) was to inject 15-30 mins before eating to give the insulin chance to get working. It's something you need to fine tune with experience, so lots of caution to begin with 🙂 Also, beware that all things brown aren't necessarily low GI - ordinary wholemeal bread is quite high GI. Better to go for something like seeded bread, or best of all Burgen soya and linseed (yummy!)

Hi Ben welcome to the forum and Happy Birthday

Hey guys and thanks for the warm welcome!

Always go for the seeded wholemeal full a fibre type stuff!

I thought id got the timing thing crack when i was on novarapid, but now im on apidra and re - learning ratios and timings.
