Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, after visiting the doctors suffering with back pain my doctor sent me for routine blood tests, the results came back showing a high glucose so she then sent me for a fasting blood test and again I had high glucose so three weeks ago I was diagnosed with diabetes type 1, this came as quite a shock as apart from losing a stone in weight over a period off about four months I have not really suffered any symptoms and have no history of diabetes in my family and am generally in good health. I am now adjusting to taking 4 injections daily and checking blood sugars. As I dont know anyone who also has diabetes type1 would love to hear others stories and any advice x

Hi Suzi, welcome to the forum 🙂 I lost a couple of stones over a two year period prior to diagnosis, but it was only when I got an infection that things really went downhill, so it can creep up on you slowly. Your body burns fat and possibly muscle as you lose your ability to produce insulin resulting in the weight loss. No history in my family either, and I was 49 before I was diagnosed with 'juvenile' diabetes - a week before I was due to run a marathon! So, sometimes there can be no indication that it might befall you.

What insulin are you on and how are you finding things? I would highly recommend getting the best ever book about Type 1 - Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas. Whatever your age it is a superb reference for anything that may concern or confuse you. You are also welcome to ask us anything as well, of course! I hope you find the forum useful and I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Thanks I will definately be getting the book. I am on Levimar and Nova rapid, dont mind the injections but levels are still quite high so just working on getting the balance right, the diabetes team at the hospital have been really good and am in weekly contact with them at the minute which is a real help as it can be quite overwhelming.

Have you been taught to carb count yet, or are you relying on them to adjust your doses? Good to hear you have some good support 🙂

Hi Suzi,
welcome to the forum.🙂

Hi Suzi

Welcome to the club no-one wanted to join!

There's a lot of it about and it is hard, to begin with - I was diagnosed as an adult (22) and 'on my own' with it myself for yonks.

Internet's a wonderful place for finding empathy and tips, wish I'd had it then.
