Type 1
Hello,

So i am a newbie to this whole forum thing! My name is Kat and i am 26. I have had diabetes (type 1 ) since i was 4 so you'd think i'd know my stuff and be super controlled by now! Unfortunately not! Just confirmed that i will be starting on a pump in April so feeling a bit nervous!

Look forward to speaking to you 😱

Welcome my D friend 🙂 Great to finally have you on here!!

(for everyone else, Kat was on my BERTIE course back in October, and we've stayed in contact ever since 🙂 )

Hope you find this forum as useful as I do!

xx

Hi Kat, welcome to the forum 🙂 Lots of experienced pumpers here, and also a few that are just starting out so you'll be able to compare notes or get answers to any questions you may have - so fire away! 🙂

Have you got the book Pumping Insulin by John Walsh? Highly recommended by many of our pumpers. What sort of pump will you be getting?

Hi Northerner!

I have recently just trialed an Accu chek Combi. I quite liked it and it became more natural but i only had it for 3 days so didn't get to play badminton or do some of the things that i wanted to do while it was on. I really liked the remote control idea of it as i was quite conscious of people seeing it and asking questions. I liked that i could hide it away and just press a button!

Do you have a pump? Which one do you use? I was torn between the Combi or the Medtronic pump?

I don't have a pump, but I'm very lucky that my control on injections is very good. I bet you can't wait! We do have some members on the Accu Chek, so you'll have lots of 'buddies' 🙂

See Alan...I've been actively recruiting 🙂 lol

Well done Katie! Keep up the good work! 🙂

Hi Katjamo

Welcome to the forum 🙂

I started on a Medtronic Veo in November after a long time of being very unsure about the whole pump thing.

So far so good! I've dropped loads of hypos so far, and lots of the higher spikes. Not perfect yet, but a general 'smoothing out' of the graph. And having your insulin with you wherever you go is incredibly convenient! (I had worries over being attached to something that have been *far* outweighed by the benefits).

First pump A1c this week, so hoping I'll not have gone up too much - the first one can often see a rise cos of all the 'sorting out' that needs to happen in the early days.

Not sure how it will work with badminton - you'd be fine disconnected for about an hour so might just be able to unhook for the games and re-connect when waiting I guess. Otherwise there are companies that make nifty neoprene style sports 'harnesses' to fix a pump somewhere if staying attached ends up being better.

Get stuck in and post away 🙂

Hi Kat. Welcome 🙂

Good luck with the pumping. I'm curious at the moment but unlikely to qualify without a fight. I hope you can pick up some useful tips from the forum🙂

Good luck with the HBA1C, i'm sure you will see a difference. Just from trialing the pump i could see how much easier it would be to control my blood glucose. Since coming off the trial i am already slipping back to forgetting to test! With the pump there and the blood glucose machine linked you cant forget or not bother as it does everything for you!

How do you find the Medtronic? I was undecided between that and the combi but went with the combi purely for the remote control. What feature is best about the Medtronic?

keep us informed with your latest HBA1C won't u!

I was using the Expert (very similar to the Combo handset) and really liked it. The main reason I went for the Medtronic Veo in the end though was it's in-built CGM capability (sensors for which would have to be self-funded in my area) - I am going to a Medtronic event in the next week or two to find out a bit more, but in the unlikely event that I win the lottery (not very likely I don't play it LOL!) it would be *amazing* to have that additional stream of data to be able to avert even more lows and highs before they even happen.

Katie's asked me to write my take on an MDI vs Pump comparison, which I'm hoping to do in the next week or so.

I would be very interested in seeing your comparison! I agree that having the sensor would be brilliant but unfortunately i just can't afford to pay ?50 every 3 days for the rest of my life! If i win the lottery (unlikely!) i would definately have the Medtronic though!
